What a great book to pair with a great champagne in a gift basket!

This is a lovely little book, full of solid historical information, as well as funny, trendy modern details of champagne about and why we love it. I thought I knew a lot about the region, Champagne, and the beverage, champagne, but then I read Ms. Epstein's book and found out how much more there was to know. I plan to buy a few copies of the book, get some baskets and put a book and bottle in each, tie them up with a ribbon and then I'll have handy gifts for the holiday season. Now wait, does Amazon sell champagne?

In today's busy world this fact-filled book is just the thing when you are at a wine store searching for the perfect bottle to bring to a party, or more important, the "story" behind the bottle! Or at a restaurant, you can zip past those $300 bottles of fine champagne and find an excellent Spanish or Italian sparkler for under $30. The writer has a fun style that engages the reader and keeps one interest.

It's amazing how much information, anecdote and effervescence is packed into this compact, champagne-coloured, volume by wine and spirits expert Becky Sue Epstein.

Compelling reading that celebrates while also demystifying the mystique of champagne, this is an accessible and entertaining book that should appeal to connoisseurs and beginner bubbly-lovers alike.

Epstein manages to take the guilt out of buying inexpensive sparkling wine by pointing out that champagne is, after all, ONLY a sparkling wine - dignified by its colourful history and careful marketing by the fiercely protective producers in the Champagne region of France.

She made me feel better about what I'd previously seen as settling for a sparkling wine such as a Spanish 'Cava' - or a Californian 'Brut' that I've learned from this book uses the same grapes as champagne. So now if friends seem to look down their noses as my bubbles go up them I can quote chapter and verse to show them that there is no excuse for being a champagne snob. This is an ideal gift book for actual or aspiring lovers of the good life.

Any serious attempt to explain social life has to come to terms with sociology's positivist legacy. It is a heritage on the one hand from the seventeenth-century political arithmeticians and the later moral statisticians who believed that quantification would provide the basis for a dispassionate analysis of social affairs; and on the other hand from the nineteenth-century post-Enlightenment social philosophers who were eager to develop an empirical science of society that would enable them to control social conduct – just as the physical sciences had provided the knowledge to tame nature. Yet every debate about the relation between positivism and sociology is clouded by the diversity of uses of the term 'positivism' – uses that are so varied that some can pronounce positivism dead while others find it still the vital force that dominates sociology.

The particular merit of Peter Halfpenny's book is that it makes this diversity of uses its central theme. In order to provide a clear basis from which to assess controversial questions about the contribution of the positivist traditions to sociology, the book reviews twelve different important uses of the term 'positivism' that have emerged at different times since the mid-nineteenth century, when Auguste Comte coined both 'positivism' and 'sociology'. This review is conducted by examining the historical development of the two independent roots of modern sociological positivism – positivist philosophy and statistics – and by analysing logical positivist philosophy, which in many ways defined the course of twentieth century philosophy of the social (as well as the natural) sciences.

It is difficult to learn a skill such as drawing without a single illustration. To gain understanding of a visual entity with only a written description is a real challenge ... one that doesn't offer much chance of success.

Jazz pianist tool for improvement

I bought this book because I had had some success with the traditional classic Hanon drills and upon taking up jazz piano, I wanted something to keep myself occupied when I missed a lesson or my teacher was away, or whatever. I found this to be probably the single best book for practicing jazz technique. Many of the exercises are based on the all important cycle (or circle) of fifths and the ii-V-I progression, but before long, it moves to scales, dominant sevenths, diatonic progressions, etc. After breezing through the first few exercises (what jazz pianist doesn't learn the cycle of fifths and ii-V-I on the first day and practice it every day for a month, without a book?), the exercises suddenly increased in difficulty and "esoteric-ness". In fact, my only real dig against this book is that it gets complex and difficult pretty fast. The only other thing I don't like is the fact that there is no explanation of what exactly you are practicing and why - just, here's some notes, good luck! (I usually get my instructor to fill in the blanks.) Still, I consider this a valuable tool in my jazz piano advancement, and I continue to use it on a regular basis. If you are a jazz pianist who occasionally needs some structure from outside besides your piano teacher, this book should fill that gap nicely.

Terrific Piano Practice

The author states "Always practice with a metronome", about the best advice I've come across. The exercises themselves are not very hard to do, but playing in exact time takes a little doing - and is for me very valuable training, and enjoyable, too. After 15 or 20 minutes of the exercises, playing of other music is much smoother, more confident and rhythmic - I was elated the first time I experienced this effect. I expect this book to become a mainstay in my progess with piano. If you are a beginner or intermediate player, and are not familiar with this sort of practice, by all means give it a try.

Great book, a lot of useful exercises, 3 and 4 note voicings for many different progresions (ii, V, I), diatonics, dominant sevenths...etc. Good for beginners with an understanding of some theory, as well as, intermediate to advanced piainsts.

Exposing Dark Matter

This book provides new eyes to a subject that is rarely discussed. Well, it is most often discussed as we talk about the internet and what happens to private data from our lives and business. However, as with most things in the United States, there is a dark side most often suspiciously addressed to the dark people in our midst. Yes, I'm talking about history, the beginning of the country and slavery. In the United States, the Africans were always watched: Are the blacks doing what they are suppose to be doing? Are the blacks where they are suppose to be? To know all this requires deputizing everybody, most often whites, but also the non-white Africans and native Americans, in the service of this agenda. I learned a lot. From lantern laws to passports, so very much in our everyday life goes back to the need to know where the Blacks are and what they are doing. Now that all are enslaved via credit, the surveillance state has evolved and intensified so gradually -- like a simmering pot that boils. Thank you for giving us new insights into the "how" and the "why" of our present surveillance state.Through the Lens of the Transatlantic Slave Trade
