Dr Rob Yeung is a business psychologist and director at consultancy Talentspace. He specialises in interviewing candidates on behalf of employers as well as training them in interview skills. Interviewing well - on both sides!

How often have you been to an interview only to find that it is a training session for an interview? Probably more times than you wish to recall ... or actually realised! The `interviewing game' is highly important and Dr Rob Yeung comes to the rescue of the inexperienced with helpful suggestions on the many proven techniques which leading organisations now use to find the right candidates, and spot what is going on...on both sides.

INTERVIEWS: WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!

Characteristics of the good interviewer/interviewee attract a great deal of rubbish comment in the press, and in books, so it is refreshing to find Yeung's treatment of what is a painful experience for most people.

Finding the right person and ensuring that the right buttons have been pressed is as difficult as anything one can do in working life. I had always thought `getting that job' was about luck. Wrong! Yeung's view is that it's about preparation, and his final words cover `The 10 commandments' at the conclusion of the book which candidates should note and memorise carefully.

There are 14 chapters covering the following issues:

* why learn to interview properly?
* structuring the interview
* developing your questioning skills
* avoiding poor questions
* honing your listening skills
* preparing to interview
* opening the interview
* competencies and example interview questions
* discussing money
* wrapping up the interview
* rating candidates and making a decision

THE FUNNELLING AND STARS TECHNIQUES

Most people reading this review, which is designed primarily for my law trainees as a forensic technique, will recall their examinations and the techniques used to revise for law exams. "Funnelling" on page 26 is an excellent device and complimented by Yeung's STARS acronym for the employer covering: situation, task, actions, result, summarise.

The importance of STARS is two way. As an interviewee you want it to be a two-way interview otherwise how are you going to work with these people! As an interviewer, you must structure what you want to ask.

It's not quite like a cross-examination where I will develop points which arise from answers given, but I will have thoroughly prepared my questions in advance in the areas where there are issues between the parties but I have to be flexible if the evidence given does not `come up to proof' as we put it.

But you have to `come up to proof' in the interview thus avoiding poor questions (and poorly prepared questions) which are common errors.

YOU CAN ALWAYS DO BETTER

I came away from Dr Yeung's work glad to have read something which confirmed my best and worst thoughts about technique. He is right to say that interviewing is a skill, but it is also one which can be meticulously learnt with proper preparation and care which Dr Yeung sets out in a most useful format here.

The step-by-step guide is a splendid collaboration with `the Sunday Times' but remember that whichever side of the desk you sit on, you can always do better and Rob Yeung gives you the best current and contemporary analysis of how to interview and recruit in the internet age of employment finding, and his advice should be followed.

Great book for Interviewing

Very easy to read and provides an excellent guide to proper interviewing. I found this book to be very eye-opening to my own interviewing styles (strong and weak qualities). I recommend this book to anyone who will be conducting interviews and wants to do it properly and fairly. It even notes in the book that we think we know what were doing and that it's right...but we are wrong (and it explains why).

About the Author
Philip Appleman (New York, NY) has published eight volumes of poetry, including Karma, Dharma, Pudding & Pie (Quantuck Lane Press, 2009); New and Selected Poems, l956-l996 (University of Arkansas Press, l996); three novels, including Apes and Angels (Putnam, l989); and half a dozen nonfiction books, including the widely used Norton Critical Edition Darwin, and the Norton Critical Edition of Malthus' Essay on Population. His poetry and fiction have won many awards, including a fellowship in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America, the Friend of Darwin Award from the National Center for Science Education, and the Humanist Arts Award of the American Humanist Association. Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, he is a founding member of the Poets Advisory Committee of Poets House, New York, a former member of the governing board of the Poetry Society of America, and a member of the Academy of American Poets, PEN American Center, Poets & Writers, Inc., and the Authors Guild of America.

How do you rate brilliance?

I really wish I knew this man, I'd gladly have him over for tea or a bottle of scotch. His poetry hurts in such a good way, especially if you're a recovering christian. I thank you, Dear Sir, for this and the other writings of your's that I wish to obtain.

My husband and I greatly enjoyed this book. Philip Appleman has a great sense of humor. He addreses many of the questions I have had about God and the Bible.

smart ironic and mind opening!

I dont usually care much for poetry , but his poetry was so special in that he he twists the myths of the bible and brings out the truth which is far more synical than most woould want to believe . I found it also entertaining.

Something I really enjoyed about this book is that it isn't preachy

Something I really enjoyed about this book is that it isn't preachy, rather set in a conversational tone. This book explains how to feel a little more at ease when talking to the opposite sex, and confidence really does attract interest. There are a few spots in this book that made me giggle, I like when the author speaks candidly about a situation or subject matter. I am a bit awkward at times when communicating with people in general, so this book definitely gave me points to think about and try to improve on. This review is written based on my unbiased opinion.

The Science of Attraction is a must read for anyone ...

The Science of Attraction is a must read for anyone who is having trouble in the relationship department. It goes into detail on different things that we each look for in creating a lasting relationship. Having access to this book some 20+ years ago might have saved me from a divorce or two. People today are more in touch with technology than each other so they can really benefit from reading this book and learning what to look for and/or avoid in a potential life partner.

This is a good tip book.

This is a well written book for those that need help in flirting. This is written to give you tips on how to flirt and attract the opposite sex. these is an easy read and the tips are easy to take and make your own and use yourself. I fnd that this books flows nicely and you just keep just readu=ing and finding new tips to use to get the results that you want to accomplish. These is a book with tips that you can easily use and not feel that you are cheesy or obvious that you are using tips from a book. I received this free in exchange for an honest review.

A Long Journey

Rita Gabis grew up with the knowledge that her family's heritage was both mixed and mysterious. Her father's family was Lithuanian Jewish, while her mother was of Lithuanian Catholic descent. As a young girl born in the 1950s who spent her childhood in the American Midwest she was always conscious that her maternal and paternal relatives were not at ease with each other, and that distant events in a far away land had an ongoing influence on her and her family. Eventually Gabis learned that her maternal grandfather, whom she called Senelis and knew as a kindly old man, had possibly done something terrible many years before she was born. Whether there were any truth to the rumors and what, exactly, he had done or not done. became an obsession with Gabis, and she spent years tracking down the truth: Senelis had worked with the SS during the German occupation of Lithuania, Poland, and the Soviet Union during World War II, and therefore may well have had a hand in the torture and execution of thousands of Jews and Poles.

Gabis' description of her long search for the truth about her grandfather is a compelling read. It involves not only her research on Senelis' activities but also the sometimes painful process of reestablishing contact with some estranged family members and asking them to revive buried memories. It also involves lengthy journeys to Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, and Russia to visit archives and libraries where she has to work around bureaucracies and deal with official indifference, poorly maintained records, and sometimes open hostility to her mission. Inevitably it also involves a lot of self-discovery, as Gabis is forced to confront her own memories, deal with old traumas, and persevere through her own physical ailments and those of
her husband and other family members. In the end Gabis finds answers to some of her questions, but she and her readers are still left in some doubt as to the full extent of her grandfather's actions.

This is a fascinating book which sheds light on some very complex history, detailing Lithuania's long twentieth century journey as it lurched from being part of Tsarist Russia to a brief period of independence between the wars, then being invaded first by the Soviets and then by the Germans during World War II, and eventually becoming an unwilling part of the Soviet Union until regaining independence in 1991. It is unflinching in its descriptions of the barbaric cruelties meted out to Lithuania's Jewish population by the Nazis and their collaborators, and it is just as honest in covering the Stalinist terrors of the immediate post-World War II era. Senelis' wife and Gabis' grandmother was one of those caught up in the Soviet purges, and she spent a decade in the gulag. Her story is also included here, and while it makes for difficult reading at times it is still essential to remember it.

Witnesses and survivors of the Holocaust are growing fewer and fewer in number, and that makes it essential that books like Gabis' which gather details from victims whose voices are soon to be stilled forever continue to be written, especially since some now go so far as to deny that those terrible events happened at all. A Guest At The Shooters' Banquet was a difficult book for Rita Gabis to write, and it is not always an easy book to read, but that's why it's so important to do so.

A stunning book...

I've often wondered what happened to the men who perpetrated mass murders during WW2. I'm not talking about the Hitlers, the Eichmanns, or the Hans Franks. I'm referring to the men with the guns who murdered Jews and other undesirables in the killing pits of Eastern Europe. And the men who dropped the Zyklon B tablets in the gas chambers, and those who drove the sealed gas trucks, killing the people inside. These men who did the actual hands-on killing. It takes a certain mentality and amorality to kill others, and as many historians have pointed out, a lot of alcohol releases the inhibitions. How did these men function when they returned to civilian life? So many were never caught or prosecuted after the war; they slipped through the cracks of justice and went unpunished for their deeds.

American author Rita Gabis explores this subject - personal to her - in her ambitious book, "A Guest at the Shooters Banquet: My Grandfather's SS Past, My Jewish Family, A Search for the Truth". The "Shooters' Banquet" referred to in the title was an actual dinner with music and alcohol served in celebration of the murder of the thousands of Jews of a small Lithuanian town in the killing pits of Poligon. The murderers were local Lithuanian Catholics who ate and drank in honor of their great deeds. (They also shot to death two local musicians who were performing for them because they spoke Polish!)

This topic is personal for Rita Gabis because her maternal grandfather was a police chief in the Lithuanian city of Svencionys. He fled with his family after WW2 and ended up in the United States, where he lived until his death. Rita's mother married a Jewish man; I can't imagine her family approved. As Rita grew up, nothing was said in the family about her grandfather's duties in Svencionys. It was not a topic anyone felt comfortable bringing up. The grandfather was known as a loving family man, and Rita's mother and aunts loved him. But Rita began to wonder what her grandfather did in the war and whether he participated in the killings at Poligon and other murders during his tenure under the Nazis in their occupation of Lithuania. About 15 years ago she started to look into his life and traveled to Lithuania and Israel and Poland in search of answers. Answers she might not want to learn.

Rita Gabis's book is a look at both the Catholic and Jewish life during WW2. Lithuania had had an uneasy past as the two religious groups coexisted in the same villages and cities. In addition to tracing her mother's family, she also follows three Lithuanian Jews who had survived the war. Their stories of the casual cruelties and killings they were subjected to in both the ghettos and the camps were, of course, horrifying. Their own random choices - like jumping off a train going to another ghetto - often saved their lives.

You'll have to read Gabis's book to see if she found the answers to her questions about her family and their past in Lithuania. It's an ambitious work, but extremely well-written. It doesn't quite answer my original question about whether these killers carry their deeds into the rest of their lives, but it gives a hint.

Mesmerizing and Infuriating

The author of the book is a poet, so that may be the reason why the narrative is so disjointed and hard to follow. She is relying on the reader to fill in the gaps and make the right associations. While I might be willing to do that for a poem, I was kind of infuriated by it while trying to read what was supposed to be a non-fiction memoir by a woman driven to find out what role her grandfather had played in the World War II slaughter of the Jews in Lithuania. In the end, I still wasn't sure, given the author's allusive style, what role he played although clearly he was on the wrong side.

I was also somewhat bored by the author's associations with the people she interviewed and her descriptions of the effect her efforts had on her psyche.

So if you are asking yourself, why in the world did I give it four stars then, let me tell you: It's the voices of the people Gabis tracked down and interviewed, the people who were in Lithuania during World War II or who are there now. The voices are wonderful-- shrewd, funny, sorrowful, and, often, extremely painful to hear but worth every moment you give them. In collecting the memories of the survivors especially, Gabis, who had serious health problems during the book's writing, has done both readers and history a great service.

Nizar Kabbani s poetry has been described as more powerful than all the Arab regimes put together (Lebanese Daily Star). He was an Arab nationalist, yet he criticized Arab dictators and the lack of freedom in the Arab world. He was the poet of Damascus: I am the Damascene. If you dissect my body, grapes and apples will come out of it. If you open my veins with your knife, you will hear in my blood the voices of those who have departed.

An outstanding poet

Qabbani was revered by generations of Arabs for his sensual andromantic verse. His work was featured not only in his two dozenvolumes of poetry and in regular contributions to the Arabic-language newspaper Al Hayat, but in lyrics sung by Lebanese and Syrian vocalists who helped popularize his work.
The Syrian poet Youssef Karkoutly said in Damascus today that Qabbani had been "as necessary to our lives as air."
Through a lifetime of writing, Qabbani made women his main theme and inspiration. He earned a reputation for daring with the publication in 1954 of his first volume of verse, "Childhood of a Breast," which broke with the conservative traditions of Arabic literature. But it was not until he resigned from the Syrian diplomatic service in 1966 that Qabbani reached full flower. After the Arab defeat in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, he founded the Nizar Qabbani publishing house in London, and his became a powerful and eloquent voice of lament for Arab causes.
Qabbani was a committed Arab nationalist and in recent years his poetry and other writings, including essays and journalism, had become more political. But his writing also often fused themes of romantic and political despair, and it sometimes treated the oppression of women as a metaphor for what he saw as the Arabs' cursed fate. In his poem "Drawing with Words" he wrote: When a man wishes a woman he blows a horn, But when a woman wishes a man she eats the cotton of her pillow.
The Egyptian novelist Mona Helmi said of Qabbani today, "His greatness came from his ability to put into beautiful words not only the ordinary actions between men and women, but also between the ruler and ruled and the oppressor and the oppressed."
Gamal el-Ghitanti, the Egyptian novelist and editor of the weekly News of Literature, praised Qabbani as having been "by any measure a great Arab poet who made a big effort to make his poetry understandable to all people and not only to the elite."
Qabbani published his first poem, "The Brunette had Told Me," in 1944, a year before he graduated with a law degree from the University of Damascus. He held diplomatic posts in Cairo, Ankara, London, Madrid, Beijing and Beirut before resigning, and had lived in London since 1967. But the Syrian capital remained a powerful presence in his poems, most notably in "The Jasmine Scent of Damascus." In his later years, Qabbani's poems included a strong strain of anti-authoritarianism. One couplet in particular -- "O Sultan, my master, if my clothes are ripped and torn it is because your dogs with claws are allowed to tear me" -- is sometimes quoted by Arabs as a kind of wry shorthand for their frustration with life under dictatorship. Still, Qabbani never explicitly criticized his native country or its long-reigning leader, President Hafez al-Assad, and that allowed him to be hailed across Syria as a national hero.

Unfortunate

This is truly a fine selection from the pen of a master poet of the Arabic language.
If you are a fan of poetry, you cannot help but be moved by the fine and artful translations presented here.
If, however you are looking for an appreciation of the original and you are not a native-level speaker, the volume fails to offer what you might hope to find in a bilingual presentation of a master poet. Due to the unfortunate choice to present the poet's original hand without typeset arabic characters to clarify it, this edition is all but useless as a chrestomathy for the beginning or intermediate student.
Qibbani's cramped, idiosyncrhatic poet's hand, unilluminated here, bars the door to what could otherwise have been an elegant journey into the mind of a true master of the language.
Other bilingual editions of poetries have managed to overcome the urge to present the art of the original pen without the benefit of a clear orthography for non-native speakers who are not professional chirographers. This edition, alas, did not.

Mr. Qabani is very famous in the arab culture. His reputation comes from the sensitive and sentimental poems he writes about love and women. Unfortunately, the collection of poems in this item did not represent well the work he is famous for.
