Imaginative and fantastic

These books are really fun. The visuals in my head are amazing. She does a wonderful job describing the indescribable.
This is a good, fluid follow-up to the first book. Things hinted at and foreshadowed are revealed, but not all, and very craftily. I'm still wanting more.
The central characters are all teenagers, with loads of teenage angst, but it's well-written and not annoying.

minor gods, review

Lost Gods is the second book in Yates' Summoners trilogy. I was originally approached by her to read through and review the first book. And I ate through it within 24 hours. And it's not a tiny book, either; it's got quite a decent length to it. It was just impossible to put down. Once I started reading, I refused to put it down.

Now, it must be said, I've been reading these books on my cellphone, so naturally I've been able to carry them around with me literally everywhere. And I love it that way. Josie's growth in this book is beautifully orchestrated, as well as is the evolution of her Triune sister Tessa. Lost Gods delves deeper into Core lore and history, and we learn more about what it is to be a Mask Maker, and maybe a little more about what it ISN'T to be a Triune.

There's still a lot of mystery around Fog God (and, if you didn't read Simone's Epilogue, a lot of mystery around the Volcano God) and more than enough frustration to keep you going. A few times reading I had to put my phone down to recompose myself. Yates has a very... personal way of writing. It's a style that's familiar and yet comes to get you in just the right spot. I suppose you could say I'm a little biased because I've been through things similar to Josie herself (of course, I'm not saying I was being trained to become the owner of the Tripartite mask or anything like that), but then again I'd like to give credit where it's due. Yates just seems to write characters you can relate to.

And I have to say, she's certainly a talented weaver where Doubt is concerned. With a capital D. There are a couple of (important) plot twists, and the entire time you're left guessing exactly who's who and what's what. I was blaming a few separate character for some pretty terrible things, but then was quick to swallow my ire as I kept reading. That's some pretty good talent, right there; to make you suspect and hate a character without any real, tangible proof, and then make you actually feel guilty about it.

But I digress. I'm already onto the third book of the Summoners trilogy, and I'm hoping to finish it today. Maybe tomorrow, if I take it slow. (Which I probably won't. It's too good.)

A+ to A.M. Yates for another amazing installation in this series. And I'll also blame her for the fact that I have several bracelets on my arm (it looks like a gosh darn cuff at this point) made of engraved stones. I may have turned into a would-be Simone. Woops?

Very powerful book

I just finished reading this book and while it does talk about country living, there is just so much more to this book then just that. It explains about what we need to be doing to get this message out and how we are to be prepared for those coming into the message. Hint....We all need to have a city of refuge. WAnt to know what that means? Read the book! Very powerful and very thought provoking.

Images from the Holocaust: A Literature Anthology

The review says CD ROM which is untrue. I had the paperback version.
Wonderful book. I use this with a college course I teach "Literature and Multimedia of the Holocaust." Excellent excerpts from larger works as well as some complete works. Variety of memoirs, essays, diaries, poems, commentaries, all sorted by theme. I use this book with Yehuda Bauer's History of the Holocaust. Students first read the chapter in Bauer's book on a topic such as life in the Warsaw Ghetto or in the camps. They then read the literary pieces in this anthology that follow the same theme. In this way they first get the historical foundation and then the personal, literary side of the same topic, written by people close to the horrors. The book truly "puts a face on the Holocaust" which is essential if Holocaust education is to accomplish it's goal. I have used this book for many semesters and highly recommend it.

A brilliant collection of true accounts and poetry

I also purchased this book for my summer class. Everyone wants to hear true testimonies of what happened during the Holocaust. What did people experience? How did they handle the horrors they saw after it was all over? Many of these questions and more are answered in this book.

A good survey of Canada's contribution

Canada's contribution to the Allied war effort in WWII is often overlooked, especially when considering army and air campaigns. Indeed, a good many Canadians served in the British military instead of the Canadian (especially the RAF), and they get lost in the shuffle. Contrasted against that, however, is the fact that the Canadian army had a D-Day beach to itself (Juno), and this army played a major role in the continental campaign that followed (just ask the Dutch and Belgians), not to mention the previous battles in Italy. This book helps to fill the gap in nicely, if in less detail than I would have liked. It is obvious that Bercusen has studied his material. The addition of some photos was a nice touch. Recommended for anyone with an interest in Canada's contribution in the "last great war." I look forward to reading his offering on Canada's effort in the Korean War (Blood on the Hills).

Canada Takes on the Axis

A very readable and enjoyable book on Canada's participation in WW2. The author wastes no time about domestic and home front issues, believing rightly, these have been covered extensively elsewhere. In general the work is critical of the command structure and organization that sent Canadian forces to war.

The Canadian Navy for the first half of the battle of the Atlantic was woefully unprepared to deal with U-Boats and convoy escourting. Short sightediness and desperation sent these ill-eqipped RCN vessels on patrol in the Atlantic, where they could barely defend the convoys entrusted to them. Over time the RCN gained expereince, training, and better gear, but it was a difficult process with the U-boats scoring hits in Canadian home waters right up to the end of the war.

The RCAF enters the conflict only marginally better off than the RCN. Pilots are trained and many RCAF personel end up flying directly in the RAF, thereby depriving many nascent RCAF sqadrons of their expertise and numbers. Over time the Canadian squadrons become adept in their place within Bomber Command, and their contrinution to the Allied bombing effort while perhaps controversial, became no less significant.

The chapters dealing with the Canadian army must wait until later in the book as these forces do not become engaged until late 1943. In general the author is highly critical of the sluggish command structure which tends to insist on set piece battles with little room for initative. In Italy the Canadian 5th armored division is prevented from exploiting what could have become a major breakthrough because of sluggish command control.

Canadian higher command suffers from the British tendency of fighting in very set-piece fashion. This often prevents taking advantage of the very good fighting qualities of the Canadian infantry who create tactical opportunities that are often sqaundered by their commanders.

In all a very readable work that is often highly critical of allied strategy and tactics. While seeing Canadian short-commings the author points out how faulty assumptions by US commanders before D-Day would see raw US infantry trying to over-come strong German beach defenses with little or no armor support. This would cost them dearly at Omaha. A different look indeed on how the US manages the war in a somewhat heavy-handed fashion. Montgomery's plodding advance before the Falise encirclement allows additional German forces to escape the pocket, and again prevents Canadian breakthrough opportunities.

Seen in the context of the over all Allied effort Canada's contribution appears significant. The constant concern of Canadian politicians is that their forces maintain independence of command, and not simple incorporation as just another commonwealth element in the British war effort. For the most part Canada succeeds in these goals, and the nation fields over five large divisions to play its part in the European theater of operations.

This book provides not only a sound description of Canada's efforts in WW2, but also a good look at the conflict as a whole. The difficulties of coalition warfare come to the fore. When a middle sized nation is part of two larger nations it risks being taken over in its efforts by both senior partners. This was very much Canada's problem, and this book shows how difficult it can be for a smaller nation in such alliances. Readers should find this book worthwhile in the different perspective and good over all historical context it provides of WW2.

Patriotic yet pragmatic

Bercuson draws a fine line between being overly patriotic about the actions of Canadian forces during the Second World War and giving a realistic and factual overview of the actions of the Army, Navy, Air Force and political forces behind them. Bercuson certainly has a way with words; as a former student of his to this I can attest. Although not a piece to be looked upon for research material in an upper level history course, it offers young history students and anyone interested in the topic a detailed, provocative perspective of the somewhat forgotten history of Canada during WW2.

Missippian Culture for the General Reader

The author has both excavated and written profusely on the Missippian Culture, centered in Cahokia to the East of Saint Louis, and the builders of the largest pyramids in North America. The culture flourished in the later Medieval times, just before the white men came to North America. Cahokia should be a famous as Chichen Itza and Tikal--this book is a superb introduction to the culture and to the scholarly discputes about its origins and acheivements.

Every well educated American should be familiar with Missippian culture. Read this book!

A history of the Mississippian people.

A very readable and comprehensive history of the endemic peoples of the Mississippi valley. Although Cahokia was the largest site structurally, pains are taken to present cultural development throughout the larger environment in the valley. From the early, less planned and less financed archaeology, through a broad look at these peoples, the text is fact-filled and efficient. This short, but well referenced and indexed book gives a thorough look at the Mississippi valley, from the initial building stages, to the tie in with the far-reaching 2,100 BC dry periods which helped bring about the downfall of Cahokia and endemic groups throughout the central and western areas of America. A must read.

Provacative and engaging account of Cahokia

Pauketat is a bit of a bomb thrower and he lobsquite a few well directed missiles in this work, but they all land to good effect and he gives a very good account of the fluorescence of the Mississippian culture at Cahokia. His argument holds together very well and his genuine passion for the subject keeps it quite engaging. My only real complaint is that the book basically ends with Cahokia, and does not really discuss the Mississippian in the Southeast at all, nor does it have much to say on Cahokia's precursors. I would love to see a volume on either subject that was as passionately, thoroughly, and engagingly written.

In a way this is almost a mirror of Kantner's work on the Anasazi, which is part of the same series, suffers from almost the reverse flaw Ancient Puebloan Southwest (Case Studies in Early Societies), barely discussing the Chacoan period, but illuminates what happened after the end of Chaco.

Highly recommended for those interested in the largest center in the Precolumbian US.

Steamy romance at it's finest.

Hot hot hot!!!! I loved this book. I was given a free copy of this book but felt like I needed to give this book a review. This book is wonderful if you like steamy romance books then this is a must read. I fell in love with the characters and the storyline. I will be honest I had never heard about this author until this book was released and I am so happy that I found this book. I was in love with it from the first few chapters until the very end. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves some hot, steamy, romance novels. This is one for my always list, meaning I will always see what this author has coming in the future.

Fantastic book must read

This was my first book by Lisa Sommers I read and it was amazing I couldn't put it down This is one of my favorite book this story made me laugh and smile let's not forget about the hunk Chris A.k.a Shane is a hot baseball player who meets a girl Allie on a flight.. I'm looking forward to read more of her books

I absolutely love this book. As you read u can picture the characters in your mind and understand how they are feeling. Best part is I got so into this book I was talking/yelling at the characters. A must read for sure. I will be re reading myself. Can't wait for the second book!
