The manufacture of fertiliser is another process involving massive slur- transport operations. Li Florida, phosphate matrix is recovered by huge draglines in open-pit mining operations. It is then slurried, and pumped to the wash plants through pipelines with a typical length of about 10 kilometres. Each year some 34 million tonnes of matrix are transported in this manner. This industry employs centrifugal pumps that are generally smaller than those used in large dredges, but impeller diameters up to 1. 4 m are common, and drive capacity is often in excess of 1000 kW. This book gives an excellent comprehensive overview of the application of pumps for heavy slurry environments. The details in the book were rooted in technical information and allowed more than just a fluffy overview of slurry pump applications. The information can be used by any good technical engineer to help properly develop systems and apply centrifugal pumps to these applications.

Great Book

I have thoroughly read this book and used it to create flow models for milling applications. The text is clear and the examples are pertinent. The terminology is clear and the mathematics are not overpowering. There are very few mistakes in the text or equations. I have read several other texts on slurry flow, and I rate this one as the best of the batch. Spend the money and get a usefull text. A big savings in the end.

Pump It Up!

Can there be any sweeter sound than the roar of the centrifugal pump? Whether it's being used to transport slurry, oil or just plain old water, the centrifugal pump is the undisputed king of fluid transportation mechanisms. I could happily spend all day staring at pictures of centrifugal pumps, playing a selction of my homemade centrifugal-pump sound sampler tapes and singing along with little made-up ditties, the lyrics of which outline the many advantages of centrifugal pumps as opposed to other, inferior pumps. Heck, I could spend an entire week like that. And if I had a wife who even took the time to try and understand me, she wouldn't dream of intruding on my contemplation with her constant interruptions, threats of divorce and quiet sobbing. She certainly wouldn't stand in the doorway with her suitcase shouting, 'What are you doing to this family? What are you doing to us?' Thank goodness the sound of centrifugal pumps is so loud, otherwise it might have been drowned out by the baby's screaming. Ch-chung. Ch-chung. Ch-chung. Ch-chung. Ch-chung. So reassuring. So reliable. Oh Karen, why couldn't you be more like a centrifugal pump? We could really have had something.

A great read

I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read other books by Ms. Conway and originally bought this for my cousin as a gift. I decided to read it before sending it and finished the book in one day. The characters and the story captured my attention and my heart.

From the small seaside town to the mysteries hiding in the ballet school up on the hill, Ms. Conway paints memorable scenes filled with characters we might have known. I think the story would appeal to a broad population of readers of all ages and can see it one day becoming a screenplay. Highly recommended.

This author has written a captivating thriller and a beautiful love story. I felt that I knew the characters, so well developed were each of the individuals in the story, some of whom I’d want to know and others, I’m glad I don’t.

This makes me want to seek out other works by Ms. Conway. She is a gifted writer who knows how to spin a great yarn. I’m going to have to read this one again — like a great meal, this book is one to savor.

Not Much Thrill in This Thriller

All I knew about this book was what I gleaned from the cover: it was about ballet, and somehow, love and horror were involved. As the story opens, I had the distinct feeling that it was taking place sometime in the 1950s. When the main character spoke, the descriptions of the girls from the ballet school, the feel of the town - all of it seemed to be from a different era. Imagine my surprise when either an f-bomb or the mention of a cell phone was introduced (I don't recall which). Shocked the senses, to say the least. Well, OK. We are absolutely in modern times. But still, there was something about it that reminded me of books from a bygone era.

Harley is home for the summer from college. He is the only of his friend group who left to go. He was supposed to leave this small town along with his then-girlfriend, Mairin. Mairin was always full of adventure, fun and a thirst for travel, but somehow her mother, a bitter and unhappy woman, guilted her into staying. Harley waited for Mairin to come to her senses, but when he returned she had already taken up with Smits, a local boy not known for his smarts, drive or temperance. And by then, Mairin was pregnant.

Always fascinated by the line of beautiful ballet girls that glided into town every summer, Harley noticed a new face among them. A beautiful girl who hadn't gotten that snobby, cold look yet that the others had mastered. And when fate caused them to cross paths during a horrible storm, he was totally smitten. His friends certainly weren't happy, though; there was always a divide between those at the ballet school who spent the rest of the year in New York City, and the townies, especially after local boy Teddy Flynn was found dead at the base of a tower on the ballet school's property. No one who knew him believed that he had been drunk and fallen out the window, as was recorded as the official cause of death.

But Harley is totally taken with Cassandra, and though he knows that something bad happened between her and her last boyfriend, he knows he would never do anything to hurt her. In fact, that's how all of the girls from the ballet school feel. But when Cassandra gets the role of Giselle and starts spending almost all of her time at the school, he starts to hear stories about other boys who stood in the way of a dancer's career and suffered because of it. Cassandra then becomes the pet of the guest ballet teacher, a woman who had a brief relationship with Harley's own father - and had tried to stab him.

There are strange things happening up at the school, to say the least. But he can't stay away from Cassandra.

This story felt long and languid; like I was lying in a hammock, and a Southerner with a slow drawl was reading it out loud to me while I napped. The cursing, to be honest, felt weirdly out of place. And the action was there, but it felt like one of those dreams where you are running in place and trying to get somewhere but you have cinder blocks on your feet and you are in a pool full of Jell-O. This story needed to have more snap, like the sails on Harley's boat; it needed to skim more lightly during the in-between parts and linger over the drama. The ending was a little lackluster, and even the title I found to be passive. For me, this pas de deux is more pas de dull.

The loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986 is usually ascribed to NASA's decision to accept a safety risk to meet a launch schedule. Vaughan, a professor of sociology at Boston College, argues instead that the disaster's roots are to be found in the nature of institutional life. Organizations develop cultural beliefs that shape action and outcome, she notes. NASA's institutional history and group dynamics reflected a perception of competition for scarce resources, which fostered a structure that accepted risk-taking and corner-cutting as norms that shaped decision-making. Small, seemingly harmless modifications to technical and procedural standards collectively propelled the space agency toward disaster even though no specific rules were broken. We see the bureaucratic culture that shaped the behavior of the rocket scientists: they launched Challenger expecting some damage to the now infamous O-rings. How they reached that position of tempting fate infuses Vaughan's account. Making arguable constructions about the engineering mentality and group-think, Vaughan focuses on the fateful teleconference the night before the launch, in which executives of the rocket manufacturer first resisted then caved into NASA's pressure to launch. For exerting that pressure, the space agency's managers were pilloried, but personalizing the blame, Vaughan believes, ignores the acculturated rules they followed--which emanated from the political and funding compromises that created the shuttle design. Though Vaughan's scholastic diction acts as narrative speed bumps, her sociological interpretation helps explain the seemingly inexplicable. Normalization Of Deviance

As a sociological explanation of disastrous decision making in high risk applications, this book is without peer, exceeding even Charles Perrow's work by a fair measure. Vaughan, a sociologist, obviously worked very hard at understanding the field joint technology that caused the "Challenger" accident, and even harder at understanding the extremely complex management and decision making processes at NASA and Morton Thiokol.

The book ultimately discards the "amoral calculation" school of thought (which she was preconditioned to believe at the outset of her research by media coverage of the event) and explains how an ever expanding definition of acceptable performance (despite prior joint issues) led to the "normalization of deviance" which allowed the faulty decision to launch to be made. The sociological and cultural analyses are especially enlightening and far surpass the technical material about the actual physical cause of the accident presented.

This is a masterful book, and is impeccably documented. The reference portion of the book in the back is especially useful, in that she reproduces several key original documents pertinent to the investigation which are difficult to obtain elsewhere. My only objection to the book is the extreme use of repetition, which I think needlessly lengthened the book in several areas, and obfuscating sociological terminology like "paradigm obduracy" which not only fails to illuminate the non-sociologists among us, but makes for somewhat tortured prose.

In praise of the book, however, it is a brilliant analysis of how decisions are made in safety-critical programs in large institutions. Chapter ten, "Lessons Learned," is particularly noteworthy in its analysis and recommendations. It's a shame that managerial turnover has ensured that few of the "Challenger" era managers were still at the agency during the "Columbia" accident era. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

This book makes for very weighty and difficult reading. Having said that, I highly recommend it to technical professionals, particularly engineers and managers involved with high-risk technologies. Likewise, it is absolutely imperative reading for safety professionals, consultants, and analysts.

Thought Provoking

I have purchased this book several times in different formats. This book goes into the culture behind NASAs Challenger Launch. While that is the primary focus the deeper focus is on why many modern companies fail because their culture dooms them. When companies become so focused on moving forward that they will not listen to any dissenting voices in the ranks disasters happen. It is especially significant that when a disaster happens many companies immediately "react" to it - however their culture brings them right back into another disaster because change cannot really take place. Many companies talk about the need to change or grow, yet often look on people who have different opinions or ideas as outsiders who "poison" the company culture. Instead of getting rid of these people or alienating them companies should look at ways to investigate even the wildest claims with open minds instead of instant dismissal. In the case of NASA, their culture fell right back into their old ways resulting in the loss of the second shuttle something this book made clear was a possibility - before it happened.

The book is interesting and technically accurate, providing an "outsiders retrospective" of the management processes of a large technical project.

The seal failure and the assessments associated with it are only one of hundreds of such technical decsions before a launch. I suspect NASA has learned a lot from this disaster.
I found the book interesting but needing some balance in the assessment of the totality of the project and its associated risks.
Bearing in mind the frontier expanding nature of the project
I suspect, having met and spoken to Andy Thomas, the astronaunts have a very detailed understanding of these risks.
A good read.
Only problem was the countless spelling errors and syntax mistakes, caused I suspect by the digital conversion. It really should not happen. What happened to the simple proof read process, this would have fixed it.
