About the Author
CHETAN SINGH SOLANKI, PhD, is Associate Professor, Department of Energy Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He is the recipient of Young Scientist Award from European Material Research Society (2003), Young Investigator Award from IIT Bombay (2009) and several other awards for paper presentations. He has authored many books published by PHI Learning, New Delhi. The Hindi version of his book Renewable Energy Technologies. A Practical Guide for Beginners got the first prize from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in 2011. His research areas include high efficiency c-Si cells, thin film c-Si cells, concentrator cells and modules and nano-materials for solar cells. Dr. Solanki is currently one of the principal investigators of the National Centre for Photovoltaic Research and Education (NCPRE), funded by the MNRE, Government of India.

Kindle edition - missing figures - don't buy

I bought the kindle edition of this book and finished 59 %. The content of the book is very good and author has given technical info in lucid way.

The concepts are explained well with Figures, but in kindle edition figures are missing. This is really infuriating, disappointing and makes me feel like I have wasted my money. For instance I was reading about MPPT Charge controller and the concept is explained very well and it has referenced to Figure 8.13 but the figure is missing. Reason I am annoyed is because of missing important Figure which explains I-V characteristics of module and it is important in designing system. This characteristics is given on every PV module and you need to understand how this graph works.

Really annoyed and not happy with the purchase, I should have gone for print edition from other website it costs the same.

Jacob is a young boy with a gift for carpentry who is busy finishing up a project for a contest. His teacher, Rabbi Simeon, not only instructs him in carpentry, but also teaches him important lessons about God. Remembering what Rabbi Simeon had told him, Jacob returns to the workshop and takes his project (a feeding trough) to the new family. The morning of the contest, the Rabbi pleased to find out that Jacob has acted upon the lesson he learned and has truly given a gift to God.

It's not just for children!

Jacob's gift is a story that one will not easily forget. It sheds new light on the gift-giving tradition, and causes one to realize that it really is the thought that counts. God obviously put considerable thought into the precious gift given to us: the Christ Child.

A special Christmas story

Max Lucado has a knack for taking a story from the Bible and making it come to life. "Jacob's Gift," illustrated by Robert Hunt, is certainly one of those stories.

Jacob, the main character in the story, exhibits a natural talent for working with wood. The Rabbi has announced to all his students the upcoming arrival of his nephew, a master carpenter from Nazareth. The nephew is coming to help the Rabbi select one of his students to work on a new synagogue. Jacob is intrigued by the idea of being chosen for such an honor and is working on a special project to prove his talents.

Rabbi Simeon knows Jacob is on his way to becoming a master carpenter himself. He tells Jacob, "God has given you the gift of woodworking." He goes on to say, "God gives gifts, Jacob. Some can sing, others teach, and you - you can build...God gave you this gift to share with others...When you give a gift to one of His [God's] children, it's like giving a gift to God."

Jacob spends his days helping his father get their family owned inn ready for an expected influx of visitors; he spends his evenings cutting, sawing and shaping his special project. Then, on a special night, when the stars are bright overhead, a man and a woman arrive at the inn his father owns. Jacob sees the bright star and follows the light to the inn's stables, where he sees a stranger, with his wife and their newborn infant. The baby is wrapped in cloths and is lying on the ground in a nest of straw.

Jacob has spent countless hours on his special project; it's a new type of manger that Jacob designed himself, a manger with wheels. He knows he has done a good job on it and he wants to have it ready to show to the Rabbi the next day, but when he sees the baby lying in the straw, he also knows that's not a fitting place for an infant. He gives the new manger to the couple for the use of their newborn son. Little does he realize the significance of his gesture, the true measure of his gift.

This is a book about the birth of Christ, about Christmas, but that is really only a small part of the story. The larger message is about giving gifts to others and about God's gift of his Son to us.

The book is beautifully illustrated with life-like drawings done mostly in muted colors.

What I Like: Everything.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Age Appeal: The publisher suggests an age group of 9-12 years, but I believe this is a book that the entire family would enjoy.

A Very Special Christmas Present

JACOB'S GIFT is another wonderful retelling of the Christmas story by Christian author Max Lucado. Jacob is a young carpenter apprentice who has a creative imagination. He often finds himself ridiculed by the other children who do recognize his talents, but the master carpenter, Rabbi Simoen, recognizes and encourages the talent of Jacob.
The class gets excited about a carpentry project that will be judged by Simeon's nephew, a carpenter who will be visiting Bethlehem very soon. Jacob decides to build hay troth on wheels. He is busy at work when he hears a cry from a stable. A child has been born, but it has no crib. Jacob wonders if he should ignore the cry, or give the young couple the unfinished hay troth to use as a crib even though it will mean he will not have a project for the contest. Jacob decides to give away the troth. When he begins to tell Rabbi Simeon why he has no project, the nephew arrives. He is none other than Joseph who proudly tells the story of his son as well as the generosity of the Jacob whose gift saved the day.
Lucado is again able to tell the familiar story of the birth of Christ in an interesting and engaging manner. The artwork by illustrator Robert Hunt will capture the imaginations of younger children. The book is also suited for older children as well since Jacob is probably a preteen and has to make an important moral choice

not really good to read

quite complete when it comes to anesthesia, however, it sometimes contradicts itself from chapter to chapter (sometimes even in the same chapter!). not really good to read. dry topics, such as the anesthesia machine are way better presented in other texts. other chapters are good though

Dr. Nagelhout is the instructor for my Pharmacy class in my CRNA program and he's just simply amazing, there is no other way to describe it. The book takes some very difficult concepts and Dr. Nagelhout simplifies them to help the reader truly understand what is happening. Very helpful resource when needing to find quick information on a case.

Best anesthesia book I currently have

As a new SRNA, we have John's book, little miller, barash, m and m. So far I live this book for its direct and clear message on each topic. It is not nearly as wordy as some of the others. The other books listed above try to write in a language that is very flashy instead of delivering the information in a way that you can retain. I have about read this book cover to cover and it is impressive. It is a must have for new SRNA students!

Delightful English ghost stories

What a pleasure to discover this "long lost" collection of classic English ghost stories! And many thanks to Ash Tree Press, for digitizing many of their limited editions for the Kindle.

Randalls Round collects nine stories by Eleanor Scott (a pen name of H.M. Leys) first published in the early 20 th century. The stories have a similar feel to those of M.R. James, and also reminded me of the weird tales of E.F. Benson. The tales are chilling, not gory, and many end at the crisis in the action -- sometimes ambiguously. I especially enjoyed these mysterious gaps and slight hints -- Scott leaves plenty of room for your own imagination and avoids the sometimes stultifying tone of some ghost stories. Her use of ancient folklore for the background in many of the stories is done with a light but devastatingly effective touch.

A nice collection of stories you've probably never read, with some really excellent pieces like 'Randalls Round', 'The Twelve Apostles', and 'At Simnel Acres Farm' (though "The Room" seemed too much of it's period to be really frightening)...but her characters often seem clueless in the extreme. The American in "Twelve Apostles" (a story that owes a lot to "Count Magnus" and "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas") finds these giant slime-trails leading from the haunted room he's ordered unlocked, and he very casually assumes they belong to a possibly man-sized slug...and just ignores them. Still, it's a good collection...and most of the stories were worth the price. Give it a shot, won't you?

undeservedly obscure

A great collection of spooky stories by Ms Scott. I had never heard of her, and apparently this is her only volume in the genre. Highly recommended for fans of M.R. James or E.F. Benson.

Great for German students

My daughter reads at a fourth grade German level. She truly enjoyed this book. She read it in German after she read it in English twice. If you are looking for a motivating book for a mid-level German student, I would recommend it. It is just as entertaining in German as it is in English. My daughter enjoyed doing all the voices of the characters in German. She had watched the old school movie version of it. The dialog in German is very good. The translator did an excellent job!
