So dynamic and kept me guessing! I can't wait to read the next book!

Full disclosure: The author presented me with a free copy of this book for an honest review.

I have always enjoyed stories of a time long since past, and this book certainly has a story that captivates. The story is set many hundreds of years ago in the highlands during a time when local Lairds ruled the regions under the king. The reader is introduced to a fair, young, nobel lady from the lowlands named Katharine, who lives under her uncle's heartless rule. Since her father passed away, her power hungry uncle swooped in and claimed her region and rules with little care or concern for the people. Katharine's uncle was pleased to marry off his niece and give her new husband a very large dowry. Part of the arrangement was Katharine had to renounce her claim to rule her native-born lands.

Katharine's new husband is a total and complete stranger from the highlands named Naill. He is large as a giant, very intimidating, and is the Laird of Duncarra. Naill brings Katharine back to his keep at the heart of the village. She sees why he was so eager to marry a stranger, the very large dowry was the lifeline his land needed to survive. As the story progresses, the reader grows very attached to the characters and the growing love between the newly married couple. Naill is a flawed man who has been spurned by love in the past and desperately wants to shield his heart from Katherine.

Katharine's good nature and compassion for his people is so endearing. Katherine is also a healer as well as a lady and I enjoyed reading about the various concoctions used to help treat the sick and injured people of Duncarra. Some of the treatments are used today (dandelion root for example). Things are finally going so well for Katharine and she is very happy to have a new home with people she can love and be loved in return. Things seem short lived, though, and Naill's terrible step mother comes into the picture and stakes her claim as the Lady of Duncarra. the wretched woman is no better than the abusive uncle Katharine left behind.

When things are turned upside down and threats are ever present to the land of Duncarra, to Naill, and to Katharine, the reader is left with nothing to do but keep turning the pages. I was surprised at every turn with the plot development and I was always trying to figure out who is behind all of the deceit. I fear that I can say no more for risk of spoiling the incredible story.

The author has done a fantastic job of creating such an intricate story with largely dynamic characters. I am looking forward to reading the inspirational versions (where the romance scenes fade to black) of the next stories in the series!

Highland Solution by Ceci Giltenan is honestly one of the best books I have read this year. It really amazes me this is the authors first time out writing a historical romance as this is one of the best books I have read this year and I read a lot in this genre. If you love authors like Diana Gabaldon, Laurin Wittig, Tanya Anne Crosby and Suzan Tisdale I promise you will love this book. It starts out as the heroine Lady Katherine Ruthven is given a choice between the convent or arranged marriage by her abusive Uncle Baron Ambrose Ruthven. The marriage is to handsome highland who need the marriage to save his clan from ruin Laird Niall MacIan as his wicked step mother spends every penny in her selfish pursuits in Edinburgh and he suspect some neighboring old feuds have stirred uo again and are stealing from his starving clan as well. Basically he has no choice although due to a past betrayal marriage is the last thing Niall wants, but he has no choice plus he has been given permission from King David himself. Of course when he sees how beautiful Katherine is and learns of the torture she had to endure living with her horrific Uncle things start to change. Maybe all women aren't from the same apple tree after all?

This book really had me totally captivated and I also loved the love Katherine feel for stable boy orphan waif Tomas who Katherine convinces Niall to bring along or the boy will be horribly abused by her evil Uncle. I also enjoyed some on the secondary characters such as Fingal , Niall's half brother I am really hoping the author Miss Giltenan writes her next book about him I totally adored his character as well as neighboring clan Laird Tadhg Matheson also another secondary character I enjoyed for a future book as I see it. This story really had me hanging on by the edge of my seat as with so many different conflicts and beside the love story there is murder, mystery and suspense as well. I felt so many emotions through this read really love when that happens only when ready a really wonderful over the top read. As in all good books there are villains as well who might put an end to Katherine and Niall's happiness such as his step mother and Fingal's biological mother Ethne and also Malcolm MacLennan who is an allied clan leader and has always been like a devoted Uncle to the MacIan brothers and it certainly surprised me as I will leave it at that. Lots of surprises in this book too in the story-lines, plots as the main characters in this book keep changing. Once you think you have it figured out and then another twist and turn and they become something so completely different then you thought.

I definitely recommend this book to everyone it was absolutely fabulous one of the best reads I have read this year! As for the lassies who enjoy a fine looking lad in a kilt and spending a a few wee hours in the Scottish Highlands then this book is definitely for you! Give this debut author a chance I promise you will not be disappointed actually quite the opposite, as you will be delighted and mesmerized instead! I would give this book ten stars if I could yes loved it that much! I so look forward to more wonderful books by Ceci Giltenan a definitely keeper in my book!

I am so honored to have been turned on to Ceci's excellent writing This author is one of the very best in her gente.I just finished my fourth book by her and can honestly say I am far from finished .This has been an experience I will not soon forget .As long as Ceci writes I will be an ardent fan .Thanks for bringing me out of my rut and turning me on to a wider world I will be encouraging all my high school students to open their minds to this excellent author .Her books are well written well edited and extremely exciting .

I enjoyed the story

I enjoyed the story. . .but I was slightly irritated how it ended. My fault really. I didn't realize it was a cliffhanger type of book. I don't mind short stories...as long as there is some king of resolution. Just a heads up before you start reading. You are going to want to pick up the next book to find out what happens. This is the first book I have read by Karen Erickson and I am so glad that I already have the next one.

Three best friends, Reagan, Natalie and Andrea were all nurses that needed a break and Vegas was it! They saved for a year and were ready for some wicked fun for the weekend. When they finally made their destination they still did not have their luggage but they needed to go out. So a shopping trip was the best choice...they didn't expect it would change their night.

While shopping they met a stranger named James that promises a party they would never forgot with famous men. He knew they were perfect for what his clients and his friends had in mind. The girls didn't know if they could trust him but once he threw out who he worked for Reagan was all too excited.

They were ready to get the night started. The night that could change their lives. Will they get what they are looking for? Was James the real deal?

I love that the three friends are real. They have debts, they are nurses and want to let loose for one weekend.

Great quick read with the promise of things to come...

This is the first book of Karen's that I've had the pleasure of reading. Although it is incredibly short it still manages to pack in a good bit of introduction to who the characters are and their personality traits that make them distinguishable. Our three hard working nurses and main female protagonists Reagan, Natalie and Andrea are off having a grand old time to themselves in Vegas when they come across a mysterious stranger in a clothes store who is about to help alter each of their love lives.
It's a witty quick read at this point and I get the feeling we're simply being set up for the bigger and better events to come in the next instalments. It's slick and precise in writing, there is no filler with endless monotonous descriptions of unnecessary things just a good rundown of the girls and the potential leading men that are going to storm in and sweep them off their feet as well as a good meaty hook to snare you in the form of reformed bad bay actor Declan who takes an instant shine to one of the vacationing ladies. If you're looking to suspend reality for an hour and lose yourself in the world of 'what if you met a real life film star' with plenty of thigh clenching sexual tension then Wicked Weekend is the place to start. I cannot wait to see where this yellow brick road is leading us.

Still useful after all these years

Yeah, these works were written in the 20th century, but that only makes them more interesting. Insights may change over time, but not all of the old insights are invalidated by metahistorical developments. Tuchman writes beautifully and knows how to research andr tell a story.

I bought this volume as a gift for a well-read European friend whose take on the Great War is unlike most Americans'. She is quite pleased: apparently she's learning a lot about a fundamentally US point of view but has also found some significant historical details that she didn't know.

I have three copies of this book (one a first edition, first printing) and give it as gifts to friends I think would enjoy it. Tuchman's 'The Guns of August' and 'A Distant Mirror' are two books most definitely in my top 10 all time favorite reads. I've three copies of 'A Distant Mirror' as well (also, one is a 1st ed. 1st printing).

A tedious classic

It won a Pulitzer many years ago, but it's a tedious read by today's standards. Tuchman was the first biographer to write in such detail, but you find yourself flipping back too frequently to see who is being described, and in some cases, which side he's fighting for.

Interviewing well - on both sides!

How often have you been to an interview only to find that it is a training session for an interview? Probably more times than you wish to recall ... or actually realised! The `interviewing game' is highly important and Dr Rob Yeung comes to the rescue of the inexperienced with helpful suggestions on the many proven techniques which leading organisations now use to find the right candidates, and spot what is going on...on both sides.

INTERVIEWS: WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH!

Characteristics of the good interviewer/interviewee attract a great deal of rubbish comment in the press, and in books, so it is refreshing to find Yeung's treatment of what is a painful experience for most people.

Finding the right person and ensuring that the right buttons have been pressed is as difficult as anything one can do in working life. I had always thought `getting that job' was about luck. Wrong! Yeung's view is that it's about preparation, and his final words cover `The 10 commandments' at the conclusion of the book which candidates should note and memorise carefully.

There are 14 chapters covering the following issues:

* why learn to interview properly?
* structuring the interview
* developing your questioning skills
* avoiding poor questions
* honing your listening skills
* preparing to interview
* opening the interview
* competencies and example interview questions
* discussing money
* wrapping up the interview
* rating candidates and making a decision

THE FUNNELLING AND STARS TECHNIQUES

Most people reading this review, which is designed primarily for my law trainees as a forensic technique, will recall their examinations and the techniques used to revise for law exams. "Funnelling" on page 26 is an excellent device and complimented by Yeung's STARS acronym for the employer covering: situation, task, actions, result, summarise.

The importance of STARS is two way. As an interviewee you want it to be a two-way interview otherwise how are you going to work with these people! As an interviewer, you must structure what you want to ask.

It's not quite like a cross-examination where I will develop points which arise from answers given, but I will have thoroughly prepared my questions in advance in the areas where there are issues between the parties but I have to be flexible if the evidence given does not `come up to proof' as we put it.

But you have to `come up to proof' in the interview thus avoiding poor questions (and poorly prepared questions) which are common errors.

YOU CAN ALWAYS DO BETTER

I came away from Dr Yeung's work glad to have read something which confirmed my best and worst thoughts about technique. He is right to say that interviewing is a skill, but it is also one which can be meticulously learnt with proper preparation and care which Dr Yeung sets out in a most useful format here.

The step-by-step guide is a splendid collaboration with `the Sunday Times' but remember that whichever side of the desk you sit on, you can always do better and Rob Yeung gives you the best current and contemporary analysis of how to interview and recruit in the internet age of employment finding, and his advice should be followed.

Very easy to read and provides an excellent guide to proper interviewing. I found this book to be very eye-opening to my own interviewing styles (strong and weak qualities). I recommend this book to anyone who will be conducting interviews and wants to do it properly and fairly. It even notes in the book that we think we know what were doing and that it's right...but we are wrong (and it explains why).

About the Author
Philip Appleman (New York, NY) has published eight volumes of poetry, including Karma, Dharma, Pudding & Pie (Quantuck Lane Press, 2009); New and Selected Poems, l956-l996 (University of Arkansas Press, l996); three novels, including Apes and Angels (Putnam, l989); and half a dozen nonfiction books, including the widely used Norton Critical Edition Darwin, and the Norton Critical Edition of Malthus' Essay on Population. His poetry and fiction have won many awards, including a fellowship in poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America, the Friend of Darwin Award from the National Center for Science Education, and the Humanist Arts Award of the American Humanist Association. Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, he is a founding member of the Poets Advisory Committee of Poets House, New York, a former member of the governing board of the Poetry Society of America, and a member of the Academy of American Poets, PEN American Center, Poets & Writers, Inc., and the Authors Guild of America.

How do you rate brilliance?

I really wish I knew this man, I'd gladly have him over for tea or a bottle of scotch. His poetry hurts in such a good way, especially if you're a recovering christian. I thank you, Dear Sir, for this and the other writings of your's that I wish to obtain.

A great Little book

My husband and I greatly enjoyed this book. Philip Appleman has a great sense of humor. He addreses many of the questions I have had about God and the Bible.

smart ironic and mind opening!

I dont usually care much for poetry , but his poetry was so special in that he he twists the myths of the bible and brings out the truth which is far more synical than most woould want to believe . I found it also entertaining.
