About the Author
Christy Ford Chapin is an assistant professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her areas of research include political, economic, and business history as well as the history of capitalism. A key question driving her research is how the blending of public and private power has created a distinctive form of capitalism - American capitalism. Chapin has won numerous awards to support her work, including the John E. Rovensky Fellowship in American Business and Economic History and a Miller Center for Public Affairs Fellowship. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE MUST READ BOOKS

I have had the pleasure of knowing the author for quite a few years as he is a neighbor to my parents. I had no idea about his
background and he never mentioned his early years in any of our conversations.After reading this book i have a whole different level of respect for this lovely man.
i consider myself a student of history but had no idea that these atrocities had occurred!!
I think this book should be REQUIRED READING for anyone seeking degrees in political acience or world politics.
i highly reccomend this although difficult at times to read due to the graphic truth; it will enlighten you as to how cruel this world can be

Compelling first-hand account -- interesting and well worth reading

In Forgotten Atrocities: Memoirs of a Survivor of the 1947 Partition of India, Bal Gupta, offers us a first-hand account of his own experiences as a child during the Partition, the tragic violence that destroyed his beloved home town of Mirpur and of the chaotic flight, massacre of Hindus and Sikhs by Pakistani soldiers and the cruel and wretched conditions of the Alibeg Prison where he and many of his family were held and where many were murdered or died of starvation and disease.

Forgotten Atrocities is an important, well-researched, non-fiction work. In addition to using secondary source materials, Mr. Gupta personally interviewed other survivors, participants and observers that confirm and supplement his own memories of the events he lived through and witnessed. By extrapolation of the author's family story to the many millions of families directly affected by Partition, the reader comes away with an understanding of the scope and scale of the very real suffering and loss that individuals and families experienced as a result of Partition.

But to his credit, Mr. Gupta does not simply memorialize atrocities he and his family, friends and community suffered. Instead, he acknowledges that atrocities were also committed during Partition by Hindus and Sikhs against Muslims. He also recounts examples of kindness and heroism by Muslims towards Hindus and Sikhs and by Hindus and Sikhs towards Muslims. And he shares with us a glimpse of his long, happy and blessed life subsequent to his release from Alibeg Prison.

About the Author

Douglas C. Giancoli obtained his BA in physics (summa cum laude) from the University of California, Berkeley, his MS in physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his PhD in elementary particle physics at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent 2 years as a post-doctoral fellow at UC Berkeley’s Virus lab developing skills in molecular biology and biophysics. His mentors include Nobel winners Emilio Segr� and Donald Glaser.

It's really a good book and it explains the application of physics in depth and making it understandable. It's not a self study book though, I needed my teacher's help and this textbook I was able to make an A in College Physics even though I took high school physics 10 years ago.

Too much text.

Overall, this is a decent textbook. The authors cover everything that's needed to know for any general Physics course.
However, a major flaw and advantage is the amount of information compressed within 1000 pages. Providing dozens of explanations and examples in each chapter does help students to better relate to the meaning behind the formulas. But by doing this constantly, the book must be slowly read with a strong attention span.
The problem with this book is focus. There is too much design, text, and colors going on at any given page.

Peter Lawford: His Life Given Meaning

I am a long-time amateur film historian, and have read many film and theater personality biographies over the past 25 years. This is one of the best bios I've ever read--not because of the subject matter--but because of the biographer.

James Spada is an absolutely top-notch biographer. His detailed book on Peter Lawford--a pleasant, eager-to-please, nominally talented, gentle-spirited soul--is not only historically accurate, but is historically important. Why? Because Peter Lawford, a performer of modest ability only deserving of a footnote in American film history, if any at all--was also a well-bred, well-traveled, well-liked and well-associated gentleman who easily cultivated significant relationships with significant people.

For instance, Lawford had a romance with Britain's Princess Margaret, and married the sister of the man who would become the most beloved 20th century American president. Lawford was intimates with and was admired and adored by major players in both industry (the Fords) and Hollywood (Monroe, Garland, Taylor, Sinatra). But overall--he was a really nice guy who was liked by a lot of people from all walks of life, someone you would want to have as a good friend.

James Spada's gentle but non-editorializing understanding of human nature, his interest in his subject, his research, organization and writing style are among the best I've ever seen. I say that this work on Peter Lawford is, in many ways, a relevant companion and addition to an American presidential history reading list as is the assiduously-researched and reported Doris Kearns Goodwin book, "THE FITZGERALDS and THE KENNEDYS".

Many times, movie personality biographers conclude their works with a chapter or paragraph that they hope will give some sort of a hindsight summation to their subject's life. But without indulging in writer's ego, Spada allows Lawford's life to speak for itself throughout the book, which negates the need for such a summary.

Throughout the book, the author gently leads the reader through Lawford's enchanted but isolated early years with its strange details about Lawford's formidable, disturbed mother. He discusses Lawford's personal choices, his work challenges and difficulties, and the cruelty of power and politics when it is mixed with friendship. We walk along Lawford's personal life and career path that ends in an impassable roadblock. And finally, Spada lets us off on the rusty tracks of Lawford's later life train-wreck, which makes us understand for ourselves why and how his salvation was simply impossible.

One of the best biographies ever; the definitive Lawford bio

Having read Spada's Grace: The Secret Lives of a Princess, I was more than anxious to read his 1991 expose Peter Lawford: The Man Who Kept The Secrets. This was an absolutely absorbing, stunning insider portrait of a remarkable, charismatic man who died broke rather than cash in on the alleged Jack Kennedy/Marilyn Monroe affair. The Marilyn Monroe segment is perhaps too sensationalist to be completely true, but the rest of the book seems factual.

Peter Lawford may have achieved little in the way of acting at MGM, and is best remembered as the late, beloved President's Rat Pack brother-in-law, but his courage, compassion, humility, humor, and respect for his peers persistently shine through. His bizarre peripathetic childhood as the only offspring of displaced, dispossessed, and bitterly racist British aristocrats clearly yielded a well-brought up, handsome young man who was racially tolerant long before the advent of the civil rights movement.

Spada writes with expertise as well as sympathy for his subject to present a near perfect time capsule of the glamourous Hollywood in the pre-television era that lost its bloom in the post-Kennedy years, leading right up through the rise of Ronald Reagan, whose second wife Nancy Davis was a known item around town before she met the future President. Apparently, Peter had a minor dalliance with the putative First Lady some time after his flings with Judy Garland and Lana Turner, but long before she met Ronnie in 1952. His affair with Turner was brutal; she cruelly broke his heart, although he never remained bitter. After that, he became skeptical and would never trust the opposite sex.

In 1954, he married John Kennedy's sister Patricia when they were both thirty. This was when Lawford became financially secure for the first time in his life. He fathered four children in this first of four disastrous marriages but was never a faithful husband. He was more in love with Pat's family's fame and wealth than he was with her. His long term affair with the beautiful Lee Remick continued right up until the President's death in 1963, and there is still some evidence to suggest that Remick may have also bedded the President, although this has never been confirmed.

This is a riveting read that will keep one burning midnight oil until the heartbreaking, tragic end, but somehow a fitting tribute to a lonely man who wrestled too many demons and yet is recalled fondly by nearly all who knew him.

This book was quite addictive.

This book is very well-written. It soaked me in. It was as though every moment I read it, I disappeared into another world, and the moments I was away from the book, I longed to disappear into that world again. A world that I, at first, believed epitomized all that is lush & lovely gradually eroded into a world of illusion, darkness & loneliness, and a man who I once saw as one of the head angels of that heaven, was gradually brought down to earth. This novel revealed to me Peter Lawford: the man. It revealed him in every dimension. At times I fell in love with him; at times I loathed him. At other times I weeped for the man who was a victim of his own shaky foundation. A foundation which began crumbling at childhood, and inevitably led to his fall. Many who knew him personally, couldn't understand how a man as gifted as he was, in all facets of life, could lead a life so carelessly & self-destruct so willingly. This book gives the reader something that those who personally befriended the mysterious Peter Lawford weren't even able to obtain. It gives the reader a crisp, clear & intimate portrait of the man who hid behind the beauty & the charm which fooled so many. This book is more than a story of a man's life, it's a story of life in all it's light & darkness. It will, inevitably, give the reader a brand new outlook on life & the people who inhabit it: from the "lifestyles of the rich & famous" to the regular folks who lust after it. This book will open yours eyes.

A good compilation of thoughts from major advertising forces

The book is very helpful in that is gives you the thoughts behind some of the builders of today's advertising industry. I had read "Ogilvy on Avdertising"; the interview with David Ogilvy presents the same kind of thought. But I had never read anything by Burnett, Gribbin, Bernbach or Reeves and that is where most of my benefit from this book came.

I love anything that is an interview with a person. It allows us to hear the information from the horses mouth, as opposed to a journalist paraphrasing him or her. My favorite interviews were with Bernbach and Rosser Reeves. However, I don't think this book is really about the "Art" of writing advertising. I think the book should have been called "Conversations about Advertising." Because the book isn't made to be a teacher, it's simply a good book to read and enjoy if you're interested in hearing another perspective about the business.

The Art of Writing Advertising???

Just finished the book (which took me a couple of hours) and I have to say it was an interesting memoir of the great admen of all time. The book pinpointed certain questions and tired to find some correlation between the greats (and I think it succeeded in some ways)
But do not let the title of the book fool you to believe that it will help you in any shape or form in becoming a finer copywriter. In fact, the book will most likely only offer you a good read on a Sunday afternoon.
On a particular note, the interview with Reeves was the most interesting part of the book. A worthy buy indeed but do not expect to become a super copywriter after or you will be very disappointed.

L'œuvre de Gobineau (1816-1882) est atypique. � la suite de la parution en 1853 de son "Essai sur l'in�galit� des races humaines", Arthur-Joseph de Gobineau est consid�r� par certains comme le fondateur de l'aryanisme, � l'origine de l'id�ologie nazie bas�e sur l'in�galit� des "races" et la pr�tendue sup�riorit� de ce que l'on appelle aujourd'hui l'homme occidental (ou en d'autres termes l'aryen). Pourtant, � la lecture de ses "Nouvelles asiatiques", on se trouve en face d'un observateur intelligent et surtout infiniment respectueux des mœurs et coutumes des peuples du Proche et du Moyen-Orient. Grand voyageur, diplomate en poste � T�h�ran o� il fut ministre pl�nipotentiaire, Gobineau a rencontr� de nombreuses personnalit�s politiques et religieuses et �tudi� les coutumes des peuples musulmans du Proche et du Moyen Orient, dont il parlait couramment les langues. Les "Nouvelles asiatiques" sont donc l'œuvre d'un �rudit, qui parle de ce qu'il a vu par lui-m�me ou appris de nombreux t�moignages, mais �galement d'un conteur hors-pair. Injustement m�connue, �touff�e qu'elle a �t� par l'exploitation � des fins politiques de ses �crits th�oriques, l'œuvre romanesque de Gobineau m�rite d'�tre appr�ci�e pour sa vision romantique de l'Orient.
