NOT for Russian Seven-String Guitar

There's really not a whole lot to be said about guitar chord books, other than how complete they are. Sometimes you don't really want -every- possible chord listed, as it just takes too long to look up what you need; on the other hand, you want enough material to justify buying the book. This book falls mid-way between the "chord bibles" containing thousands of entries, and the "guitar case" guides that contain a few dozen. As such, it can be a handy reference for seven-string guitar chords - IF - you happen to be using the particular tuning Johnson wrote the book around.
And there's the rub. Unlike 6-string guitar, there really isn't a single "standard tuning" for 7-string instruments. Without going into endless variations of "alternate tunings", there are at least _three_ standard tunings: classical (B-E-A-D-G-B-E); jazz (A-E-A-D-G-B-E) and Russian (D-G-B-D-G-B-D). Johnson has chosen to treat only the first of these tunings in this book, so if you were hoping for a book of jazz-voicings, or (as I was) traditional Russian guitar chord forms, this book isn't going to cut it for you. This is unfortunate, as the book is short enough that it certainly wouldn't have hurt to flesh it out with a chapter, or at least a few pages dealing with the other two standard tunings.
As I also play 7-string in classical tuning, the book wasn't a totally wasted purchase for me, although I really wanted it more for the Russian gypsy guitar, and in that I was disappointed. Material for the Russian guitar is very hard to come by; guess I'll keep looking.

Hal Leonard never disappoints in the music book category. Got as a supplement to another book in case I need to locate a hard to find chord. Small/light enough to fit in guitar case as well.
