Oliver Heywood (1630-1702) was an English Puritan pastor who was deprived of his pulpit for his Protestant beliefs. He cheerfully endured imprisonment and the confiscation of his worldly possessions so that he might bring the truth of the Gospel to his countrymen. Dr. Mick has done an amazing thing in taking a number of the puritan classics and updating the language without in any way detracting from the depth of theology or the rich writing style that so many have come to appreciate from the Puritans. This title by Oliver Heywood gives the Christian a strong, scripture-based foundation for an obedient life of private prayer. I highly recommend it and am very grateful to Dr. Mick for his continuing efforts in putting these gems into the hands of believers hungry for the deep yet practical writing of these great men of courage and faith.

I received a free copy from Story Cartel for my honest review.
These short stories have the potential to be great but they aren't there yet. There are multiple errors in grammar, the text and conversations are stilted and don't flow very well. The last story in particular was very confusing and I had to muddle through it to try and make some sense of it.
My suggestion to this writer is to read the book many times and fix the problems before publishing. Give a copy to friends and family that will give you honest feedback and offer suggestions on how to make the stories better.
I would read more from her in the hopes that the writing gets cleaned up. She has some great ideas and I hope she goes far.

I was asked by this author for an honest review through Story Cartel, and here it is:
The book itself was an intriguing read, the short story format allowing for a continuous shift in theme and character dynamics. I admit there were certain points where the direction of a story fell flat due to the cut off length and lack of development. But I find this to be a good thing. Whenever I read a collection of short stories, I actually feel more at ease knowing that there will be some that I will dislike in the mix. The fact that all these novellas were written by the same author adds to this appeal, as I felt the variation of styles truly reflected the author's attempts to expand their writing horizons. The fact that I lost interest in some stories is not meant to discourage, but to show that the author has more skill with certain literary approaches than others.
I found that the Science Fiction collection engaged me the most with its unique spins on human character, and one story in particular that stood out was Veronica-it had a great concept that made me contemplate other perspectives of death. I suppose I could say the same for the tales in the Human Interest section, although there were a few points where the narration began to grow a bit odd, but in a whimsical fashion, not grammar based or tone wise.
The section that I was most wary of was Comedy. It's not that the plots themselves were weak, but the exposition, in particular with Case of the Scheming Widow, overtook the plot and by the time the story ended, I was left feeling...blocked? In other words, I felt as though the climax was too soon, the ending too rushed. However, that is not meant to describe the quality of the writing itself, as with all short stories, there is the need to make it a stand alone account, with all the requirements of a novel condensed into a few pages.
Still, this was an entertaining read that distracted me from my bus rides, and I thank the author for that.

Promising but . . . .

Into the Light is a collection of nine short stories, three each under the respective headings of Science Fiction, Human Interest, and Comedy. The first two selections, “Veronica” and “Undo” are quite good, interesting and well written. The first is a clever tale of the power of human memory; the second a lesson in the cyber dangers of seeking a lost love. The remaining stories do not measure up to the promise of these two. The third Science Fiction entry, “Dream Diary” is another seeking love cyberspace romance in which reality duels with imagination.
The Human Interest stories are not all riveting. “Speechless Love” is a predictable “feel good” story. “She Comes in the Rain” approaches the quality of the earlier two stories and is a rather sweet story of an encounter between a young, hungry female ghost and an old woman. “Bridge of Memories,” a sort of implausible tale of a meeting of former lovers is both unsurprising and underdeveloped.
I found the “Comedy” stories neither very humorous nor intriguing. “Anatomy of a Divorce” is a sad and sort of pointless discussion of two unlikeable people who probably really deserved each another. The last two pieces, “How to Lose a Fortune in 10 Weeks” and “Case of the Scheming Widow” deal respectively with the shaggy dog story of a British gent implausibly trying vainly to dispose himself of his rich bounty and an unbelievably too competent Joe Friday detective who solves a murder mystery, saves the day and gets the girl in the end. These stories are complicated and contrived and need trimming and refocusing.
P. Wish, the author of Into the Light, employs a short sentence, staccato style that seems to work better in the short and tightly edited stories but remains less effective in the longer ones. There are some beautiful literary flashes shown by the book’s author. These include the following: “The white, diaphanous curtains danced in the wind. Shadow looked at it as if it were an old memory, fading away;” “The glass window shivered under the chill of the night;” “The singer’s pouting lips pronounced each vowel;” and an insecure female character ”hiding behind a mask of success.” These flashes, however, are mixed with some clich�d and/or uninspired language. One character gets “weak in the knees” while another “wailed like a banshee.” One story begins with the repetitive, “It was a cold Sunday evening. I walked on the cold streets.” It seems that the only sign of flirtation any women characters can give is by “fluttering” their eyelashes.
Finally, this short book could have been better proofread. I found too many instances in which words were missing from sentences. And while this never makes the ultimate meaning of any story unclear it is disturbing nonetheless.

Love This Series So Far

This is my second manga series I have started collecting recently. As such, I can't really comment on whether this story has cliche tropes that are commonly seen in manga. What I can say is that, I've enjoyed both volumes that have released so far and I've loved the characters introduced. I don't take much interest in certain manga, such as Dragon Ball, Naruto, etc, because I prefer more western fantasy themes which I believe is why I'm loving this series. I personally thought the art was great, but as I'm still relatively new to the medium, I don't have much to look to for comparison. I definitely recommend picking up this series, and as of the time of this review, it has a discount, so pick it up if it sounds like your thing.

I've read it before and it's a great story. Slow pace but there's so much depth into it. I give 5 star for the story but 3 for the shipping. primarly cause the book got damaged and considering these are still new releases there's no protective cover over them at all.

good things come to those who wait

Kore Yamazaki's artwork is simple but elegant, the inhuman designs of well-known figures such as Spriggan and Oberon being the highlights of the volume for me. There's definitely a mystical quality to the backgrounds that communicate clearly the influence of magic and fae in the story. Yamazaki clearly shows a lot of patience in getting all the small details down, which reflects perfectly the pacing of the story: patient. It's clear there's a lot more of this magic in the future, whether it's more details on Chise's "condition," Elias' background, the practice of magic itself, or the in-depth mythology Ancient Magus' Bride draws inspiration from. I'd say the series is a bit of a slow boil, but as the old axiom says, good things come to those who wait.

About the Author

Michael Ford read English and Classics at Oxford University, before a stint teaching English in Greece. He worked in children's nonfiction publishing for several years before becoming an editor of adult fiction in West London. Spartan is his first children's novel.

Fire of ares

AMAZING!!!!!!! This book touched my heart. It is just amazing. Don't get the sample. Buy the book. It is worth it. I had to something for summer reading. I chose hatchet, which by the way is amazing too, and Fire of Ares. I loved it so much. I would recommend this book for people who are at least 11. There is some words that are kind of hard to understand. And there is violence. I'm not giving any details, because I want it to be a surprise!!! Bye! :)

About the Author
Karen Goldfinger, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist with a private practice in psychological assessment and psychotherapy in Essex, Connecticut. Psychological assessment has been an abiding interest over the course of her career, beginning in graduate school at the State University of New York at Albany. She has completed countless psychological assessments in clinical, forensic, and educational settings over more than 20 years. She has written psychological assessment manuals, supervised clinical psychology doctoral students and interns in psychological assessment, and taught psychological assessment to doctoral students in a professional psychology program.

Andrew M. Pomerantz (BA, psychology, Washington University in St. Louis; MA, Ph D, clinical psychology, Saint Louis University) is professor of Psychology and director of the Clinical Adult Psychology Graduate Program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses related to clinical psychology and maintains a part-time private practice of clinical psychology in St. Louis. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at Indiana University School of Medicine Psychology Training Consortium. He is the author of Clinical Psychology: Science, Practice, and Culture (3rd Edition, SAGE, 2013) and Psychological Assessment and Report Writing (with Karen Goldfinger; SAGE, 2010). About the Author

Robert Kemp, DBA, CPA

Professor Kemp is the Ramon W. Breeden, Sr. Research Professor at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. He is a certified public accountant and possesses a baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorate in business administration.

 

Professor Kemp is an accomplished scholar, conducting research and writing in the theory and practice of contemporary business. He currently is conducting research in the funding of pensions, the management of financial institutions, and corporate finance. His scholarly works include 70 completed projects, including monographs, articles, cases, research presentations, and working papers. His work is published in, among other places, The Financial Review; The Journal of Financial Research; Advances in Accounting, A Research Journal; Benefits Quarterly; The Journal of Mathematics Applied in Business and Industry; The Journal of Accountancy; The Journal of Commercial Bank Lending; The Journal of Bank Accounting and Auditing; and The Journal of Business Economics.

 

Professor Kemp is likewise an accomplished teacher, to both University students and executives throughout the world. During his 36 years at the University of Virginia, he has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses. He has taught classes using lectures, case studies, discussion groups, and distance learning. His consistently high evaluations by students reflect his devotion to the classroom. This high quality is also seen in his teaching of business executives. Jeffrey Waybright teaches accounting at Spokane Community College, which is part of a multi-college district in eastern Washington. He has been a full-time, tenured community college instructor for more than 23 years. In addition to teaching at the community college level, he has also taught upper division courses for Linfield College. Jeffrey is a co-recipient of the Washington Society of CPA’s Outstanding Educator Award.

 

Jeffrey received his BA in business administration (emphasis in accounting) and MBA from Eastern Washington University. Before becoming a professor, Jeffrey spent eight years as a practicing CPA in Washington State and still holds his license. During his teaching career, he has taught in many disciplines of accounting, including financial, managerial, computerized, and payroll accounting as well as in the disciplines of entrepreneurship, economics, business math, and general business. Jeffrey developed online courses in accounting, teaches online and traditional courses for financial and managerial accounting, and advises students. Jeffrey is passionate about teaching students on the subject of accounting.
