Not Romance, Fantasy

This was a horrible horrible book. I could not get over the betrayal and the writer really does not adequately IMHO address the issue. I don't understand how the hero could expect girl to forgive him, much less take him back. The only reason the girl would take him back after he slept w/ her best friend, dump her at the alter and make her lose her baby would be if she had no self-esteem of her own. I can understand (though far fetched) her staying friends with this man but to take him back was just too hard to swallow. I would never, even if it was free, recommend this book. It was frustrating and I just wanted everyone in the book to just die. I hated everyone, even the kid!!! Seriously, it was that bad.

p.s. the sex scenes sucked too

DREARY AND DEPRESSING

SPOILERS AHEAD......Basically this is the story of Troy who nine years prior cheated on his fianc�e Bree with her best friend Meg. When Meg turns out to be pregnant, he elopes with her and they marry. He only tells Bree after, and then only by phone. By sheer coincidence Bree was going to tell Troy she was pregnant herself. Instead she left town, but lost the baby at three months pregnant.

Present day and Bree has returned home for her sisters wedding. Of course she runs into Troy. Who had lost Meg in a road traffic accident fours years before. But he berates Bree for not attending the funeral. After all both he and Meg had apologised.
Troy never knew about Bree's pregnancy or miscarriage, she never told him.

What a shambolic mess this story is. The reader is never shown anything that happened in the past. All we get are small remembered snippets of conversations. The main story that is set in the present is weak, very little happens. The characters are shallow and self absorbed. I found it very difficult to relate to them in any way. Nothing happens except Troy constantly blames Bree for leaving town, and he can't understand why Bree who was madly in love with him wouldn't want to hang round and watch him play happy ever after with her best friend. As for Bree she should have told him she was pregnant. It might have made this a more interesting tale. And just to top it all off, Bree's father tells her that when Meg got pregnant he was the one who told Troy to marry her. But then as her father was a cheater himself what else can you expect. With family like that who needs enemies.
If I could have given this no stars I would have. First and last read for me by this author. Don't waste your money.

Always a Bridesmaid

It's been nine years since Breanna Parker has been home, but her sister's wedding leaves her no choice but to return to the place where her heart was broken. Troy Youngwolf has never stopped loving Breanna, but a youthful drunken mistake forced him to marry her best friend. Something that Breanna has never forgiven. But he's a widower now with a daughter and he's determined that Breanna give him another chance. Breanna can't wait for the wedding to be over so that she can get out of town as quickly as possible and away from Troy. Although she still has feelings for Troy, she can't get over his betrayal and no matter what he does or how he tries to explain, she simply wants to leave. Preferably before he breaks her heart again.

I have to say, I usually really, really enjoy Elaine Hopper. As soon as this came across for review I wanted it. However Always a Bridesmaid left me feeling more frustrated than happy. I could have easily forgiven Troy his mistake but his late wife was such a cardboard character and the reasons beyond "he was drunk" were never really provided. So I never really felt that the book delivered the character depth that I needed to get past the betrayal and see him as hero material. Especially considering the way he just up and married without giving Breanna any warning. And without that depth I was frustrated by the constant barrage of characters who were on to Breanna to just forgive as if she was somehow in the wrong. Ms. Hopper still can put together a compelling storyline, but Always a Bridesmaid just missed the mark for me.

I used this book for a core class in college. This book complemented the class well. I was able to follow the book after the lecture and could still complete the examples on my own.

Compact and effective

Very compact and effective in delivering knowledge. The hints for homework exercisese at the end of the book help a lot in developing a solving strategy for several kinds of problems, without actualky showing you the full solution (which would beat the purpose of an exercise).

This book makes the concepts in real analysis easy to understand. I like it better than the Ross book, although I think it covers less topics. (Sufficient for a 1 semester Real Analysis course though)

The eccentric figures include the secretive Marconi and one of his rivals, physicist Oliver Lodge, who believed that he was first to make the discovery, but also insisted that the electromagnetic waves he studied were evidence of the paranormal. The parallel tale recounts the story of Dr. Hawley Harvey Crippen, accused of murdering his volatile, shrewish wife. As he and his unsuspecting lover attempted to escape in disguise to Quebec on a luxury ocean liner, a Scotland Yard detective chased them on a faster boat. Unbeknownst to the couple, the world followed the pursuit through wireless transmissions to newspapers on both sides of the Atlantic. As with Erik Larson's previous book, The Devil in the White City (*** May/June 2003), Thunderstruck alternates between the perspectives of two historical figures, one a scientist and one a killer. Opinions vary as to whether Thunderstruck is as successful as its predecessor. The murderer's story is deeply compelling, but the recounting of Marconi's tribulations and triumphs as an inventor occasionally fails to hold some readers' interest. Moreover, the two stories take place in different years, which creates perspective shifts that some critics found disorienting. Reviewers uniformly praised the pacing and language, however, and admired Larson's choice of main characters, both of whom are as fascinating as they were a hundred years ago.

Two complex (real) characters dramatically and accurately presented

Erik Larsen is an admirable researcher and tension builder as he was in the boffo 'Devil in the White City'. I loved learning about Marconi, a fascinatingly complex individual and the amazing Dr. Crippen. The tale bogged down in the middle but it sure caught fire when Belle disappeared. Another amazing chapter in history masterfully told.

Note on Larson's research: He doesn't just provide a fact, he shows his relentless research in things like the cat used in the forensics study of Belle. He not only knew the cat's name but that it survived and was adopted by a medical assistant, had a littler of kittens and was done in by a dog. He doesn't do research by halves.

In the Garden of Beasts - which were terrific studies in the good and evils of men

i had read some of Larson's later books - Devil in the White City, In the Garden of Beasts - which were terrific studies in the good and evils of men. I did not find the same level of villainy in Hawley Crippen, but Larson more than made up for it with the expert way he weaved Crippen's story with Marconi's. Larson's portrayal of Marconi as a self-absorbed genius made it difficult to root for him at every turn, but his accomplishments can't be denied. Good read, although not quite at the level of Devil, Beasts or even Dead Wake, but I'm a big Larson fan, so even his lesser works are better than most.

Electrifying

I did not want to put this book down. How a spoiled obsessed young Marconi could capture the world's attention with alternating enthusiasm and doubtful dread uncoils into a very involved novel that leaves the reader wondering if the outcome will be successful regardless of the annals of history. It was fascinating set in a very volatile period of time. If you like historical novels, and if you're a fan a science, this is your book.

Great book I am defedently going to get the next book it has a great story and I have read many many books in my life and this is my 2nd favorite book and I am 10 and I love it❤ this author is amazing. only complaint is that is it kinda short I mean it Is to me but then again I read as fluwent and fast as a high schooler but what I love about it is it levels you with sicpence at the end.......... I guess what I'm trying to say is that I LOVE IT SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!^-^ BEST BOOK EVERRRRRRR and good job

Recommends book because it is very very very clear to read and also had a lot of figurative language so it was funny to hear the biggest thing that were important in this story were in the book so I really hope you read this book it is really funny and very narrative you can hear his voice as a good thing!!!

Bologan writes very instructively and the material is presented in a very tidy manner, making it admirably accessible. He keeps things very clear and doesn't bog the reader down in complex variations. The explanations are good and the conclusions at the end of each chapter are particularly welcome. Bologans explanation of what White is trying to accomplish will be just as valuable to the layman as the concrete lines he offers. An excellent and up-to-date work. Bologan, with his clear explanation of the aims of both players, has written something that will continue to be useful even after some of his analytical suggestions are inevitably refuted. A strong GM's guide to Catalan opening theory

Victor Bologan is clearly one of the hardest-working GMs in the world of chess. He did not attain the 2700+ club until the age of 34, and continues to defy all the stereotypes about youth and chess strength by growing even stronger; in his 40s, he is currently rated 2734. A key to his strength is his hard work on openings, as evidenced by the long list of well-received opening resources he has authored (7 DVDs and 4 books). Bologan has a lot experience with the Catalan (1. d4 Nf3 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 d5 4. g3); the (incomplete) online games database at chesstempo.com shows him with a record of +4 -2 = 10 playing both white and black. As you would expect, then, his recommendations and analysis in this book make another fine contribution to opening theory that will help strong players play either side of the Catalan with confidence.

The Catalan is a highly concrete opening: in some tabiyas white sheds a pawn for strong piece coordination and queenside attacking chances; in others he might opt for a better pawn structure, more space, or faster development. Accordingly, Bologan doesn't attempt to provide an overview of white's (or black's) goals, but instead jumps right into the analysis of variations from the beginning and never lets up. It's not just a database dump, though, as he gives generous text to describing the goals of various moves, and why certain move orders are preferred. Bologan structures the book in 18 chapters based on the black player's reply, with a chapter each on the Queen's Indian setup (4...b6), the Tarrasch (4...c5), the Triangle (4...c6), 2 chapters on the bishop check 4...Bb4+, 7 chapters on the pawn grab 4...dxc4, and 6 chapters on the modest bishop development 4...Be7.

You should be aware that this book is a pure discussion of opening theory: Bologan does not present any annotated games or discuss typical middlegame or endgame themes. As a result, I cannot recommend this book for players below expert level (Elo 2000) who want more than just the pure analysis of opening variations. Bologan does not discuss any key GM games where the black player has equalized easily (such as Nakamura - Carlsen, Tal Memorial 2012 or Ivanchuk - Gelfand, Tata Steel 2012); instead he simply recommends a different white move from a recent game between lesser known titled players that will sidestep black's strategem. Also, while Bologan's analysis is thorough and--so far as this club player can tell--accurate, he does not suggest any theoretical novelties.

A word or two about the book's cover: Bologan describes the Catalan as a way to get a mild, positionally subtle opening edge without giving black too many dynamic chances. In other words, a chess player might describe the Catalan as "deep" or "subtle" rather than "powerful." Of course, deep and subtle doesn't sell as many copies! Also, Bologan's introduction belies the subtitle ("a complete repertoire for white"), in that he explains that you will have to learn from other resources how to play against Black openings like the Bogo-Indian, the Queen's Indian, the King's Indian, the Benoni, the Benko Gambit, etc.

Bottom line: given the high quality of Bologan's analysis, you should buy this book if you're a strong player who wants an excellent guide to Catalan opening theory.

Very Good, but Missing Some Depth

Victor Bologan is a very strong player and his experience and knowledge really show in the writing of this book. His recommendations are always top notch, and align very closely with the lines played by the elite. Being that said, this work is not as good as he could have done, because he does not provide as much explanation, and he does not provide much original analysis. To be more specific, there are some critical lines (like the main line starting with 4...Bb4+) where he reaches one of Black's toughest continuations, and then provides zero original analysis. This is the reason I only give him 4 stars, rather than 5.

To summarize, I think an opening book should

1.- Talk about a good opening
2.- provide the best lines and give objective evaluations
3.- Provide original analysis when needed.

I think this book does very well on points 1 & 2, but not so well on point 3, which is the reason I only give him 4 stars.
