About the Author
Andrew Rex has been Professor of Physics at the University of Puget Sound since 1982. He frequently teaches the Modern Physics course, so he has a deep sense of student and instructor challenges. He is the author of several textbooks, including "Modern Physics," "Essential College Physics," and "Integrated Physics and Calculus." In addition to textbook writing, he studies foundations of the second law of thermodynamics, which has led to the publication of several papers and the widely acclaimed book, "Maxwell's Demon: Entropy, Information, Computing."

Richard Wolfson is Professor of Physics at Middlebury College.

Finally a textbook that fits the number of chapters you can actually cover in a semester

I love this textbook.

Essential College Physics has 26 chapters, which means I can run my students through 13 chapters per semester. With our standard college semester of 15 weeks + a finals' week, that leaves me a week or two for review as well as a couple of in class exams instead of trying to rush through 32 or more chapters in a semester and feeling like we never had time to breathe, OR cutting out the last chapters on nuclear and particle physics, which so often happens.

This text runs through the material in a straight forward and conceptual way that is well-suited for my premed students. The goals are well set at the beginning of the chapter, the pertinent equations are well marked in the text and in the summary at the end of the chapter. The problems at the end of the chapter are well suited to the level I need to have my students understand at... namely aiming for student MCAT proficiency as well as a strong student conceptual understanding of the basic principles of physics.

Each chapter runs around 20 pages or so, a reasonable amount for students to read per week on their own.

What I particularly like about this thext is that it is simple and not distracting with ancillary material for the students to plow through, which detracts rather than adds to the already demanding core materials, which the class must cover. So many College Physics texts have (well-meaning) exciting bunny trails and boxes and links to internet videos, etc at the margins of the text, and I find my students do not finish reading the actual core of the chapter. Also, there is so much material in those other texts that my students get confused and forget what the chapter is really about. This book is a simple read straight-through.

To the gentleman student who posted a review prior to mine, let me just insert that without an instructor who can adequately explain and conceptually make physics alive to students, physics is a difficult subject to do well in, REGARDLESS of the textbook. Physics should be taught by a qualified instructpor and supported by an excellent textbook like Rex and Wolfson's. It is the rare student, who succeeds at College level physics with a textbook alone.

interesting book with good advice for about finances and life

We all know PT Barnum for this circus. What we don't know is the man behind the circus. This book shares some insight into that. There is a lot more depth than you'd expect. He is more than "a sucker is born every minute" (which he didn't even say, by the way). What you get here is his philosophy of work, money, and life. Good advice you may have heard before but interesting in this concept. Like staying out of dept, for example. Over 100 years old and it still applies today. Finding your path, treating people well, etc. I got a lot more out of this than I expected and it gave me new insight as to the man PT Barnum was.

Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 - April 7, 1891), American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.

In Brooklyn, New York in 1871, he established "P.T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Circus", a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which by 1872 was billing itself as "The Greatest Show on Earth".

There's a sucker born every minute" is a phrase often credited to P.T. Barnum. However, when Barnum's biographer tried to track down when Barnum had uttered this phrase, all of Barnum's friends and acquaintances told him it was out of character. Barnum's credo was more along the lines of "there's a customer born every minute" -- he wanted to find ways to draw new customers in all the time because competition was fierce and people bored easily

Barnum wrote several books, including The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and his Autobiography (first in 1854, and later editions including 1869).

The Art of Money Getting is really the story of how to run a sales organization by understanding the mind and tastes of your primary customer base.

Barnum is a treat to read and is never boring! I highly recommend his books.

A Lifestyle Classic

A superb book and absolutely essential reading for anyone serious about making a success in business, or indeed a success in life in general. There are indeed many books about self motivation and success on the market and some are very good indeed, but this one stands out and should be a tool in every serious minded entrepreneurs arsenal. I can also recommend Napoleon Hill's classic Think and Grow Rich and anyone into sales and marketing, check out Simon Ashley Richmond's WRITE AGAIN VOL 1, not strictly a business book, but what bizarre ideas that man has for persistent sales tactics.

God desires your intimate fellowship

What if you were told the very God of the universe requests the pleasure of your company?

God is seeking those who have a heart for Him. Sheets explores what that means. It takes time and effort. It must be a priority. He uses the story of Mary and Martha to distinguish the pleasure of His company and the pressure of His company. He explains waiting on God, writes about creating a place to meet with God, explores what it means to walk with God, explains what friendship means, undistracted devotion, and how knowing God leads to knowing ourselves, to restoration and revelation.

Sheets tells a bit of his own story. His father was an evangelist and sheets was born again at a young age. But, he writes, “Being a born-again Christian doesn't equate to knowing God in a personal way.” (236) He knew who God was, he just did not know how to connect with God in a personal way and at any real depth. When things got tough he realized this faith did not sustain him. Using Jacob as an example, Sheets encourages us to seek a face-to-face relationship with our Father.

Sheets shares much needed insight into developing a personal relationship with the God Who created us. He explains that our hearts were created by God for the purpose of knowing and enjoying Him. Reading this book will help you fulfill your heart's desire. I highly recommend it.

The Pleasure Of His Company

"The Pleasure Of His Company" by Dutch Sheets is a good read for anyone either wanting to learn more about spending time alone with the Lord or needing encouragement to continue walking with Him.

The book is around 260 pages, may be read either as a devotion or regular book, and covers point such as:

1. Enoch enjoyed a close walk with the Lord - the Lord also wants us to enjoy our relationship with Him.
2. It takes time and discipline to be quiet before the Lord so we can hear from Him - it's hard to hear when we are impatient or constantly on the go.
3. God genuinely enjoys us being in His presence.
4. Dealing with distractions that keep us from focusing our attention on God.
5. Making time with God the priority in your life.
6. Finding a special place to be alone with God. I have some places in my home, local area, and places where I have traveled where I seem to enjoy a special closeness with the Lord when in His presence.
7. Learning to linger and spend extended time with God.
8. We enjoy many advantages when we spend time alone with God.

A Journey To Intimate Friendship With God

Do you know people who are close to God, they remain calm and secure no matter what seems to be going on in their life. Want to have a more rewarding spiritual life? Dutch Sheets offers a way to help through information in this book. The book is written in an easy to understand way and has great examples to help in obtaining a closer walk with God. We need to treat God as a Holy God but also as a friend and not as someone, we only ask for what we want or only invite into our lives occasionally. Dutch gives many interesting stories in his book. He wrote his book in short chapters for fast and easy reading and can be used as a devotional. He ends each chapter with a prayer. I am sure you will enjoy this book and may want to read it multiple times.
Treat God as you would a best friend and invite Him to share in your life.

Exploring the interface between theology and particular cultural activities, The Transformative Imagination engages with politics, literature, philosophy and other humanities, and the natural sciences.
