Wow, what a different perspective.

Years and years ago, I read some fine dystopian feminist novel in which men were banished to a life beyond the walls that women lived in, and appealed to them as holy figures for succor. I can't remember the name of it (it's not "The Gate to Women's Country"), and didn't worry overmuch about the simple and brutish life that it appeared men led without the civilizing influence of women. This is that other life, and it is neither simple nor brutish.
I liked it a lot, and since I'm no longer a 23-year-old feminist trying to pretend she's straight, my thoughts about men and their relationships have changed a lot, and I liked the way this book provoked those thoughts. There's tenderness here, and a lot of humor, and a lot of thought about how this world works. My only real complaint is that the ending is choppy. Obviously I have to buy the next book, and while I like this world a lot and want to find out how Tarin stays with Garrick, because he must, that always makes me cranky.

honestly, i don't see what the others see

*sigh..... ok this book started off good. I was interested in why they were there, why the men were hunting them. Tarin was funny, especially when he thought garrick was trying to "eat him" BUT when he is captured for some some reason this book just rubs me the wrong way. I start to feel really uncomfortable I have 50 pages left and im not looking foward to it. When he is captured even though it is said he is 19 he speaks and sometimes thinks like he is much younger, which is quite disturbing when i have to read about him learning how to "service" "his man" properly. The author really doesn't bother to go into why the boys are captured or why they are sent there in the first place, what happens for the first 11 yrs of their lives, where do the boys go after they get old, were the men boys too? we don't know! Its kind of sick, the boys are not allowed to read, or learn anything to better themelves mentally and i just don't think this book should be considered a romance i don't see any instance where Tarin and Garrick could be in love. Its just a slave and master relationship and not in the good way where the master secretly lets his servant get away with everything. its the ligit, bring-me-water-or-ill-beat-you kind of thing. And the whole religeous practices reminds me of a cult. i just... i don't know.... when i read the book i just can't help picturing a 12-14 yr old boy( because thats what Tarin sounds like) being violated

An Excellent Book

This review is for both Out of the Woods and Tarin's World as I read them back to back and they really did flow as if they were one book.
While several other reviewers commented on the humor in these books, I really didn't see much (other than confusion on the pronunciation and meaning of words, mix-ups in poems and songs, etc). Instead I saw a much darker and crueler man's world that the boys are forced to adapt to. Having said that, I really enjoyed both books. Tarin is a wonderful and entertaining character and Garrick (and pretty much everyone else) is a good foil for him. I thought his transition from a person who is free and independent to one who is bound to someone else and dependent on community for basic care, as well as luxuries was very well done and I would love to see another book in this series.
As to the dark side of the stories, the books occur in a post apocalyptic world and that along with the loss of basic knowledge and lack of communication between groups (the Mothers and the men, the Mothers and the boys, the boys and the men) made the cruelty and severity of treatment realistic to the story that is being told (at least to me).
