A "must have" reference and collection for all artists

As a digital artist in the computer generated industry, we constantly face the challenge of matching likeness, making believable facial expressions and create characters in different age range. It requires a lot of researches and observations, not to mention the experience and time needed to achieve the level of artistry.
In this volume, Philippe summarizes the fundamentals and shares his artistic approaches to match likeness with style. The insights and techniques Philippe shares are extremely valuable and his teaching condenses years of research and the breakdowns are precisely documented.

Couldn't be Better!

There are so many subtleties when sculpting the human face. This book shows outstanding, clear photos and explanation of the structure under the skin that plays a factor in the surface of the skin. I have Faraut's videos which are a wonderful beginning study of the important basics of how to sculpt the clay for the correct mass in all of the areas of the head which is necessary for the basic foundation. However, the finest of details couldn't be addressed in the videos. This book covers those minute details and nuances that make all the difference in your finished product. EVERY feature is broken down. For example, the mouth: the concave and convex portions of the mouth, the puffiness at the corners of the mouth, the way the lip doesn't actually begin at the area where it most protrudes. The photos accompanying these concepts allow you to understand and see the differences between the incorrect and correct application of clay. It answered all of my questions about how to render the head in a much more realistic and beautiful way.

Mastering Portraiture: Advanced Analysis of the Face in Clay

I guess I am a fan of Phillipe Farraut. After enjoying his first book and attended four of his classes, I am amazed at how he has grown. He was an excellent artist when he published his first book on portrait sculpting. This book shows a much more mature and detailed artist with subtle nuances that give 'life' to his pieces. He is much more precise in presenting techniques for placement of anatomic parts of the face. He helps the young artist with sections on 'how to avoid mistakes'.
I don't know how much better Phillipe Farraut can get as an artist but as a teacher today he is unrivaled. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in portrait sculpting.
