Second book please.

Awesome book! Hopefully there is going to be a second book. Frantz is the most underrated talent ever! Novak is so lucky to have the close friends that he does. Sadly I have seen to many people die before realizing that. If I was a religious man I'd pray for Novak. But I'm not so all I can do is set back and watch from a public distance. It's strange following Cky as a band and the crew all these years. Watching, reading and occasionally meeting them us as fans sometimes feel like we are friends already. It's a weird connection and creepy at the same time. Like when I meet one if them I know a lot about them and they have no clue who I im obviously. It's got to be strange on there end. We are fortunate that deep down under all the shenanigans there is some extremely great talent and there able to use that talent and create entertaining things for us to watch listen to and read. I'm a charm wearing old school member of the alliance. Everyday I wear my Cky and � charm. It's sad though. The "good ole days" are gone. There will never be a young Dunn pissing in dicos face in Iceland again. The greatest of that era has passed and I'm just so happy to of been if just for a fan part of it. Traveling 14 hours to see Cky play a Halloween show with 7 guys in a pickup. Then when we get there rake let's like 15 people go back to his house to sleep and hangout for 2 days, awesome groups of guys. Hopefully we get a second book soon.

A beautiful outlook on the junkie lifestyle.

I read this book while in a 30-day treatment center, I had had it for about 6 months before I just never picked it up. I've never done any hard drugs, but there were kids in there that had being doing them for nearly their whole life. I let 2 others borrow the book and they agree, this book is a must buy, especially since there is talk of a sequel.

If there is only ONE book you read this year this should BE IT. No I am not pimping out the book because of monetary gain etc al. Brandon Novak is a regular guy, a son, a friend a person... and his book is not sugar coated or full of governmental propaganda etc. It is a TRUE diary, journal, walk in my shoes BOOK!! Joe Frantz and him created a no holds real true and some times difficult to read account of ONE young mans journey into the life or lack their of dealing with Heroin Addiction...

About the Author
Arthur Kohl is a program manager in the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International. He previously worked for the Fluor Corporation, where he was Chief Chemical Engineer in the Research Division. He has been awarded many honors for contributions to chemical engineering. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is listed in American Men of Science and Who's Who in the West. He has been awarded more than 25 patents in gas purification and other chemical engineering fields.

Richard Nielsen is a Director of Process Engineering at Fluor Daniel's Irvine, California office. His 20 years with Fluor Daniel include work in gas treating, gas processing, and refining. He holds a BS degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MS degree from the University of Southern California, and an MBA degree from the University of California, Irvine.

About the Author

John Cleland was an English writer who is best known for his erotic novel Fanny Hill: or, the Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure. An employee of the British East India Company, Cleland spent extended periods in Bombay, India, until recalled to England because of his father s illness. With no financial support from his family, Cleland amassed enough debt to land in Fleet Prison, where he is believed to have composed Fanny Hill, /em>. His subsequent arrest following the publication of Fanny Hill prompted Cleland to withdraw the novel, and while it was not legally published for over a hundred years, it continued to sell well as a pirated work. Cleland never achieved professional or financial success with his writing. He died in 1789.

Published in 1749, this is a fascinating insight into social and sexual mores of the day. It is a highly romanticised account of the life of a courtesan and prostitute. I read the 'dirty bits' as a teenager, and it is interesting to read it in full as an adult. Its plot has parallels with moral novels of the time (such as Richardson's "Pamela", a dreary novel I studied at university). The language is convoluted, with hugely long and complex sentences. It is not a particularly easy read. Interestingly, oral sex and the clitoris do not figure in the sexual practices.

This edition is illustrated, but there is no information on who did the drawings. It would also have been nice to have an introduction to explain the history of the work (which was banned for a long time). Also, the edition has more typos than it should.

Overall, an intersting read, but this edition does have some flaws.

Chapter IX deals first with relativistic kinematics and dynamics, then offers an exposition of modern treatment of relativistic hydrodynamics. Chapter X introduces Dirac’s matrix calculus. Two especially valuable features of the book are the exercises at the end of each chapter, and a summary of the mathematical theory contained in the first five chapters — ideal for readers whose primary interest is in physics rather than mathematics.

An abridged version of Schouten's earlier treatise

In recent times it has become fashionable to derogate the classical tensor analysis cultivated by such pioneers as Levi-Civita, Schouten and Eisenhart. Modern critics refer to such works as a "sea of indices", the reading of which is likened to "chasing shadows". It is true that this style of tensor analysis does not uphold the standards of rigor set forth by the Bourbaki school of presentation, but, in light of the fact that the language has changed so drastically since the writing of this book, it would be fair to treat the classical theory as a separate subject, of interest in its own right.

This book offers a valuable, yet not entirely self-contained, introduction to classical tensor analysis. As a beginner, I found the text to be too terse and was forced to consult other sources, such as Levi-Civita's "Absolute Differential Calculus" and Eisenhart's "Riemannian Geometry". Once I had gained some familiarity with the basic notions, Schouten's book became the preferred reference. The author develops an extremely precise notation which he calls the "kernel-index method" and systematically applies it as a problem solving tool throughout the book. Looking back, it is difficult to say how I ever got along without it.

Unfortunately, the book's terseness is due in part to the fact that the first five chapters are basically abridged excerpts from the author's lengthier 1954 treatise, "Ricci-Calculus". In nearly every respect, the aforementioned title is more complete than the present book. In the interest of saving space for the physical applications in the second half of the text, the author omitted important details, such as an adequate definition of manifold and the role of the vector field which generates the infinitesimal transformations used in discussing Lie derivatives.

For classical tensor analysis, Schouten's "Ricci-Calculus" (1954) and "Pfaff's Problem and its Generalizations" (1949, but still in print) are both excellent. For the modern theory, I have found Noll: Finite Dimensional Spaces; Choquet-Bruhat et al: Analysis, Manifolds and Physics, Part I and II; Spivak: A Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry, Volume 1; Loomis: Advanced Calculus; and Helgason: Differential Geometry, Lie Groups and Symmetric Spaces all to be exceptionally well written.

The book, though thorough, did not meet my expectations for the application-based approach that I expected from a book aimed at Physicists instead of pure Mathematicians. Also, the type style/font employed made it difficult to read in many places.

About the Author
Aung San Suu Kyi is the leader if the struggle for human rights and democracy in Burma. Born in 1945 as the daughter of Burma's national hero Aung San she was two years old when he was assasinated, just before Burma gained the independence to which he has dedicated his life. After receiving her education in Rangoon, Delhi, and at Oxford University, Aung San Suu Kyi then worked for the United Nations in New York and Bhutan. For most of the following twenty years, she was occupied raising a familty in England (her husband is British), before returning to Burma in 1988 to care for her dying mother. Her return coincided with the outbreak of a spontaneous revolt against 26 years of political repression and economic decline. Aung San Suu Kyi quickly emerged as the most effective and articulate leader of the movement, and the party she founded went on to win a collossal electoral victory in May 1990. In July 1989 she was put under house arrest and the military junta that now rules Burma refused for six years either to free her or to transfer power to a civilian government as it had promised. Upon her release in July 1995, she immediately resumed the struggle for political freedom in her country.

Aung San Suu Kyi is an honorary fellow at St. Hugh's College, Oxford. In 1990 she was awarded the Thorolf Rafto Prize for Human Rights in Norway and the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament. In its citation, the Norwegian Nobel Committee atated that in awarding the prize to Aung San Suu Kyi, it wished to honor this woman for her unflagging efforts and to show its support for the many people throughout the world who are striving to attain democracy, human rights and ethnic conciliation by peaceful means.

Informative and Compassionate

My interest in Burma was sparked after I read Amy Tan's "Saving Fish from Drowning" in 2006. The reading of that novel resulted in a more in-depth look into the country's history, politics and peoples. During that year I set sights on Burma, somehow knowing that my passion for travel and cultural exchange would one day lead me there. As travel restrictions ease and the political situation improves an opportunity to visit the county presented itself and the need to get reacquainted with the political climate lead me to "Letters from Burma." Published in 1991, the book is a collection of letters from the country’s most visible democracy advocate and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The collection not only provides insight to the political atmosphere under which Kyi and others pressed for democracy, but it also provides a view of the cultural and religious diversity within the country. I found the letters informative and compassionate; yet I am bereft of the experience of a country that I usually glean from fictional accounts, rendered by the creative writing of the country's contemporary authors. I've always believed that the literature from a country provides a good indication of the extent to which freedom resonates within its borders. Recommendations are welcome as I start to search for recent novels set in present-day Burma, written by Burmese (or any of its citizens). In the mean time, I can definitely recommend "Letters from Burma" for its edifying content and post colonial background.

Interesting How Things Were

Letters From Burma, by Aung San Suu Kyi, are an interesting expose of how things were in Burma in 1995 during one period Suu Kyi was released from house arrest, prior to 2010. Her prose rings poetic, and covers everything from customs in Burma to the trials and tribulations of the leadership of the National League for Democracy during the brutal repression. These letters are two and a half pages each, so they're very easy to read and digest. They are written, weekly for a year, by Suu Kyi, to a Japanese newspaper. They make for wonderful reading. I don't mean the subject matters always depict a rosey scene. What I mean is that they are easy to read and Suu Kyi's vocabulary reflects that of an Oxford graduate. If you are wondering what will happen in Burma in the bi-elections of 2014 and the presidential election in 2015, this is a great book to read to see how things were when elections don't go well, but also to see the vibrancy and elan of spirit of the Burmese people, who want human rights and freedom.

Bittersweet essays

I admire Aung San Suu kyi, and read many of the recent biographies written on this inspiring iron lady. "Letters from Burma" is a bunch of her essays, about life in her beloved Burma during the Junta years. Why 5 star grade? because when it comes to the lady, I'm not really obejective.

But I'd add kind of a black box warning. For those of you who are new the story of the lady, and Burma, I'm not sure it's the best starting point. Because the letters don't build a cohesive plot. Consider read first books like "voice of Hope: Conversations with Alan Clements", and then come back to the letters.

"Uproariously funny" doesn't seem a likely description for a book on cadavers. However, Roach, a Salon and Reader's Digest columnist, has done the nearly impossible and written a book as informative and respectful as it is irreverent and witty. From her opening lines ("The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship. Most of your time is spent lying on your back"), it is clear that she's taking a unique approach to issues surrounding death. Roach delves into the many productive uses to which cadavers have been put, from medical experimentation to applications in transportation safety research (in a chapter archly called "Dead Man Driving") to work by forensic scientists quantifying rates of decay under a wide array of bizarre circumstances. There are also chapters on cannibalism, including an aside on dumplings allegedly filled with human remains from a Chinese crematorium, methods of disposal (burial, cremation, composting) and "beating-heart" cadavers used in organ transplants. Roach has a fabulous eye and a wonderful voice as she describes such macabre situations as a plastic surgery seminar with doctors practicing face-lifts on decapitated human heads and her trip to China in search of the cannibalistic dumpling makers. Even Roach's digressions and footnotes are captivating, helping to make the book impossible to put down.

Adult/High School-Those curious or brave enough to find out what really happens to a body that is donated to the scientific community can do so with this book. Dissection in medical anatomy classes is about the least bizarre of the purposes that science has devised. Mostly dealing with such contemporary uses such as stand-ins for crash-test dummies, Roach also pulls together considerable historical and background information. Bodies are divided into types, including "beating-heart" cadavers for organ transplants, and individual parts-leg and foot segments, for example, are used to test footwear for the effects of exploding land mines. Just as the nonemotional, fact-by-fact descriptions may be getting to be a bit too much, Roach swings into macabre humor. In some cases, it is needed to restore perspective or aid in understanding both what the procedures are accomplishing and what it is hoped will be learned. In all cases, the comic relief welcomes readers back to the world of the living. For those who are interested in the fields of medicine or forensics and are aware of some of the procedures, this book makes excellent reading.

Death is not the end

This is a book about dead bodies. As Mary Roach demonstrates in her new book, some bodies go on to do remarkable things, such as helping FAA investigators understand why a plane crashed or helping auto-makers design safety features that save thousands of lives. Others are asked to do nothing more than rot away quietly at a research lab where forensic scientists study decomposition in order to improve crime scene investigation techniques. Some are put to slightly more questionable uses, such as the severed heads used by plastic surgeons to practice their facelift technique (surely not what people had in mind when they donated their bodies to science). Others have had even more bizarre adventures. Cadavers have been nailed to a cross in order to prove the authenticity of the shroud of Turin. Severed heads have been poked, prodded, and given transfusions in an attempt to revive them long after they and their bodies have parted ways.
The anonymous cadavers that are the subjects of STIFF could hardly have asked for a livelier or more sympathetic chronicler than Mary Roach, who has managed to write a book that balances sensitivity and respect with a wonderfully sharp wit. In fact, STIFF is unexpectedly and quite blessedly hilarious, although the humor never comes at the expense at the dead bodies that populate its pages. Instead, Roach uses humor as a kind of psychic safety valve, a vital and much-appreciated tension release from what is, at times, some very intense subject matter.
The real highlights of this book are the sections that delve into some of the more disreputable uses of cadavers. There is a droll and utterly hilarious history of body snatching and a short overview of medicinal cannibalism (human mummy confection, anyone?). There�s a fascinating catalog of the methods historically used to make sure that a dead body was in fact dead. This chapter culminates in what is surely the most spectacularly strange section of the book, in which Roach relates the story of Dr. Robert White, a neurosurgeon who in the mid-1960s performed a series of surgeries constituting what could be considered the first head transplant (or full body transplant, depending on your point of view). A wonderfully engrossing book on a subject most of us are reluctant to talk about.

And you thought death was depressing---

Mary Roach did her homework, and it shows. She has written and information packed, insightful, educational, respectful, and, yes, funny book on what happens to these bodies of ours when we get tired of hanging out in them. I have a newfound respect for all who have donated their bodies in the name of science. Not that I give it a lot of thought, but I figured cremation would be the most logical choice. After reading this book, heck, they can do whatever they want with me. I've always felt an obligation to help others, and if I can continue to do so after I have left this world, then HOORAY.
Meanwhile, expect some odd looks when you are sitting there reading a book obviously about the dearly departed, and you started sputtering, and can't help but laugh out loud! Quirky humour, but that's my favorite kind. Thank you, Mary Roach.
I recommend this book to anyone in healthcare, or the clergy, or anyone even dealing with people who experience loss. It gives you a new perspective.
On the other hand, I will have a hard time ever eating gelatin again...

Stiff

A few nights ago I made a weekend resolution that I'd tackle the much-neglected stack of fiction that teeters on my bedside table. However, while reverentially picking up 'The Body Artist' by Don Delillo, I was distracted by a misplaced reader's copy of Mary Roach's 'Stiff'. Evidently, despite my best intentions, a modest volume of non-fiction had managed to steal it's way into my fiction pile. As morbid curiosity has always been a personal failing, I cheerfully chucked aside 'The Body Artist' and eagerly cracked open Roach's book. For the first time in over two years, I read an entire volume in one sitting.
Roach opens her book with the comparison of death to a pleasure cruise: The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship. Most of your time is spent lying on your back. The brain has shut down. The flesh begins to soften. Nothing much new happens, and nothing is expected of you....

Stiff is, without a doubt, a bizarre yet remarkably engaging read: not surprising since Roach is such a terrific writer. The author possesses the ingenious ability of being able to make digestible the most repulsive of subjects. Curious, yet not callus, Roach manages to ask-and yes, answer-questions often best left unspoken (keeping in mind public decorum). Furthermore, Roach is hilarious. Quite honestly I was surprised at how many times the author prompted (albeit sometimes guilty) laughter. A neat trick that, keeping in mind the grisly subject matter.
Roach gleefully covers merry topics such as: practicing surgery on the dead, embalmment, body snatching, the process of decay, human crash test dummies, crucifixion experiments, live burials, human head transplants, ecological (read: green) releasments, and everyone's all-time favourite- cannibalism. All the while Roach manages to honour the dead, yet simultaneously takes deliberate pains not to over-glorify the cadaver-science is science after all. One of the most remarkable aspects about Roach's book is her take on cultural definitions of `acceptable behaviour' in relation to the human carcass.
Tonight, inspired by Roach's second to last chapter: Out of the Fire, into the tissue digester: and other new ways to end up... I asked an agnostic friend if, following her death, she'd be willing to have her body ground into dog food. "No," replied my friend, despite her love for all things canine, "...I don't think so- it seems somewhat undignified." I then asked my friend if she'd be willing to have her remains tossed into the lion pen at her local zoo. My friend replied in the positive, "Most certainly, yes that'd be very cool. Maybe even a shark tank..." Vanity to be certain. Meat either way.
A warning to the queasy: Not for you.
