The Irish war for independence has been an 800-year series of skirmishes that Toolis characterizes as "the longest war the world has ever known." Born in Edinburgh of Irish parents, the journalist spent 10 years in Ulster in an attempt to understand the mind and rebel heart of the "Republican Soul." His book is a profoundly personal and chilling close-up of the IRA and its effects on those it wounds and is wounded by. Toolis' first-person account introduces us to panicky informers, volunteers who want to "be somebody," unintimidated chieftains, and an entire Irish family whose sons each experience the IRA from a different perspective. Toolis conveys combat nerves, bravado, hatred, and rage with on-site dialogues with IRA members and their families. Through his eyes, we witness home raids, arrests, close escapes and prison escapes, killing, and counter killing. At the end of his journey, Toolis admits that he lacks the intensity to kill for the Republican cause, yet he remains a product of his bloodline--he, too, possesses a rebel heart. Small societies with big troubles often spawn remarkable books, and this one on the IRA by Toolis, a British journalist of Irish descent, is one of the best. The unequal dimensions of the adversaries are extraordinary enough. The IRA consists of about 600 volunteers and has a budget of less that $8 million a year. By comparison, the British government has 30,000 combat troops in Northern Ireland and spends œ1 billion a year in attempting to suppress its opponents. Since 1973 the war has been taken to England itself in an attempt ``to sap the will of the British Government.'' The IRA came close to assassinating Margaret Thatcher and a number of her colleagues in Brighton, and more recently John Major and his War Cabinet while they were meeting at Downing Street. The strength of Toolis's book is that he communicates the personal dimension of this dedication and cruelty: a once apolitical family whose sons became leaders in the IRA or lawyers defending it; Paddy Flood, who was executed by the IRA as a traitor; Frankie Ryan, who blew himself and his girlfriend up while trying to set off a bomb; Joe MacManus, who died trying to murder a Protestant dog-catcher; and Martin McGuinness, who is probably the head of the IRA. Toolis believes the ``the long horror of Ulster's troubles is dwindling away to a whimpering conclusion,'' an opinion surprising in light of the evidence of polarization that he deploys. Despite the ``final bitter contradiction'' that ``the justice of the political cause was invalidated by the cruelty of the murders carried out in its name,'' he believes that ``there will be peace in Ireland and it will be a republican peace.'' Rebel Hearts is a fantastic account of the human side of The Troubles

Rebel Hearts is a fantastic account of the human side of The Troubles. The book blends history, story telling, and interviews to create a story that is face paced and hard to put down. The book emotionally and passionately describes the lives and deaths of IRA members and what lead them to their extraordinary circumstances. After reading this book I feel that I have a much better understanding of what motivates people to join the IRA and commit acts of terror and murder. The author, although acknowledging his sympathies for the Republican cause does his best to stay objective throughout the whole novel. His book does not condone or support the actions of any party in the conflict but instead seeks to understand the motivation of individual IRA members, and the pain and suffering brought about by their actions. The book is a must read for anyone interested in The Troubles and the conflict in Northern Ireland, and I highly recommend it. As a side note, background knowledge and familiarity with the Troubles will go a long way towards understanding this book!

Turf Battles on the Emerald Isle

Rebel Hearts outlines the conflict in Northern Ireland with specific focus on a time known as The Troubles. The book opens with the assassination of High Court Judge William Doyle. That event, more or less, sets the tone for an intimate look at the IRA, its active members, methods, and associated misery. The chapter called "Brothers" (which is my favorite) is about brothers in the literal sense. The Finucane family embodies the republican struggle with various members being indifferent, supportive, or actively involved in the hot and cold ends of the conflict. The murder of Patrick Finucane, a lawyer, gets to the core of the problem. It's a multi-faceted, protracted war of bullets, bombs, guerrilla tactics, riots, religious animosity and apartheid, legal maneuvering, injustice, long prison terms, hunger strikes, political posturing, murder, accidental deaths, atrocities, militant funerals, fortified border zones, counter insurgency, dispossession, and smoldering grievances from a bygone (but omnipresent) era of colonialism and subjugation. Yes, this is just one book about one segment of an age-old conflict. It's not comprehensive, and perhaps not even the best book on the subject (as other reviews have noted). But it is a very good book, well written, easy to read, nicely organized, and informative. It opens windows into the soul of the IRA and the painful conflict in Northern Ireland.

Early in the book, the author gives us a beautiful description of his ancestral homeland and the austere lives of his pastoral relatives. That's the true seed of the author's republican heart. Subsequent chapters are variations on a theme and hang together nicely. Some parts of the book are riveting, liked the escape from Long Kesh maximum security prison. Some of the statistics are horrific, for example, 1,382 bombings in 1972. And some facts are astounding, like the amount of money and men that the Crown has used to support and defend Northern Ireland. The main characters are different in each chapter. Toolis gives us an up-close and personal view of these people: The defender Tony Doris, the Finucane brothers, the volunteer Frankie Ryan, the informer Patrick Flood, the chieftain Martin McGuinness, the martyr Joe MacManus, and their mothers, wives, widows, sisters, and girlfriends. This is the first book I've read about this conflict. It's not an academic book, but I feel more educated for having read it. I've also read Trinity by Leon Uris, which is historical fiction, but still a good book. Additional books on this subject will likely land in my Amazon cart such as Making Sense of the Troubles or something by Tim Pat Coogan. In any case, Kevin Toolis has given us an excellent book.

Rebel Hearts: A Review

Written by a journalist born in Scotland of Irish parents, Rebel Hearts begins with a brief description of Toolis's own family background in Ireland.

His family connections to Ireland and his love for the country, soon followed by his description of the Ulster plantation and Cromwell's slaughter and displacement of the Irish people, should end any expectations that the author would take a pro-British stance on the Northern Irish Troubles.

Toolis depicts the Troubles as a modern version of a conflict that has raged on and off for the past 800 years. Interweaving Irish medieval history with modern events, he describes the waging of "guerrilla warfare against the [Ulster] Plantation" by displaced Catholics in the early 1600s as presaging the republican uprising and sectarian violence that would visit and revisit Ireland through the 1990s.

He objectively reports on the deaths of young IRA volunteers, including Mairead Farrell, and on the murder of defense lawyer Pat Finucane, a brilliant and hardworking Belfast solicitor, murdered in front of his family in 1989 upon orders from British intelligence. He also devotes a fair number of pages to an insightful interview and character study of former IRA commander, now Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, Martin McGuinness.

Overall a very well-written review of the republican movement as it stood at that time, with Toolis's own personal viewpoints honestly exposed.

Tamika Sims, a South Carolina native, survived a physically, sexually and emotionally abusive relationship of eight years. She is the proud mom of one son, who provides continual strength for her daily. Tamika is a member of Rhema Christian Center Church of God in Christ where she serves in whatever capacity needed. Tamika is currently employed at Sistercare, Inc. as the Volunteer and Community Outreach Coordinator. Tamika has been featured in Skirt! Magazine and has participated in several television interviews on home visitation and other subject matter. Tamika received the Bachelor's of Science Degree in Information Technology from South University with a concentration in Database Administration. It is her desire to pursue the Masters Degree in Business Administration. Tamika enjoys writing, reading, music, singing, and is a self-proclaimed coffee lover! Family and friends are most important to her and she devotes a substantial amount of her time to developing sustaining relationships with them.

Courage, Strength, and Determination

What a testimony of Courage, Strength, and Determination. Author Tamika Sims, walks us thru recognizing tell-tale signs that mask an unhealthy relationship after she is gripped by the spirit of fear in an abusive relationship.

Each page of The Plus Factor, sheds light and a greater understanding of how victims of domestic violence often feel powerless, with no way of escape. The Plus Factor exposes the enemies' tactics of knowing that Love is not suppose to assault you.

If you or someone you know are in an abusive relationship read The Plus Factor it gives a voice to those who are victimized in discovering that there is help all the while confessing the word of we are over-comers by the blood of the Lamb and the power of our testimony.

Author Tamika Sims is very transparent in her accounts in allowing us the reader to see the in-depth thought process of her relationship "The Plus Factor" tells her journey from bondage to deliverance and now a life of freedom.

A Voice for those Who Couldn't/Can't Speak! Beautiful Read!

I had the opportunity to read this book and it is a truly beautiful testament of God's restoring power and a woman willing to, I'm sure, painfully uncover the shame and fear that happens inside of domestic abuse. Tamika L. Sims takes us on a subtly frightening journey and shows how easy it can be to caught up in an abusive relationship. She touches every aspect of abusive relationships - the abuser, the abused, and she does a spectacular job of highlighting the struggle of the family and friends who also sometimes share in the grieving process when the violence is uncovered. I simply had no idea how pervasive, subtle, and terrifying it could be to be in a domestic abuse situation. I would recommend this book to to everyone. It is the story of not just Tamika, but gives a voice to many women who have never shared their stories.

I was deeply moved by The Plus Factor. Tamika L. Sims confronts the issue of domestic abuse, meticulously examining her own journey as a victim and survivor. In some ways, this book is intensely introspective, but the book is a teaching point, as if a woman is standing in the darkness holding aloft the lantern of experience. The book is so brutally honest that I am reminded of Mortality by Christopher Hitchens. In Mortality, Hitchens provides a frank, courageous, and detailed account of dying. The Plus Factor is no less honest than the final book by America’s greatest polemicist, and it is structured in a technical way, illuminating every subtle nuance in the stages of degeneration. In this way it goes beyond a personal account into a scientific description of the psychology of abuse.

Sims notes that women can be seduced by eternal appearances, even by the stature of a man. One thing that struck me was her description of the man’s negativity toward past female relationships. This recalls the old story of a man who moves to a new village and asks what the people there are like.

“What were they like where you came from?” the villager asks.

“Really nice.”

“You’re in luck,” the villager responds, clapping him on the back. “That’s what they’re like here.”

Another man moves to the same village and asks the same question.

The same villager queries, “What were they like where you came from?”

"Horrible,” the new man says.

“Shame,” said the villager. “That’s what they’re like here, too.”

I suppose this is a lesson. If a man speaks negatively about all his past female relationships, he may speak the same about you when you are in his rear view mirror. The common issue of women believing they can “change” a man is raised. At this point Sims is brilliant with this quip: “When I realized I could not change him, I changed me. Have you ever been so connected to someone, so intertwined with another individual, that when you try to untangle yourself, you realize that you are gone?” How penetrating and amazing is that insight? Spectacular! It is worthy of being repeated on Oprah.

Sims details the prison-like control of domestic abuse, which is oftentimes incorporated into a kind of self-censorship. It’s loathsome and dehumanizing, sad and pathetic. There is an unfounded hope, a submission of sorts, in which the woman so desperately wants to be happy that she gives herself away one piece at a time.

The book also asks penetrating questions about the role of churches, seeking a transformation from tacit approval to concerted action.

Chapter Three – The Yellow Light – was a very creative metaphor. It moved into the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde section and I found this very disturbing, as I have never witnessed any kind of domestic abuse. I read it with one eye closed and I cringed. That’s all right, though, because cringing is a prerequisite to being human.

The book elevates to the metaphysical realm at points and is continually, even when not obvious, instructed by Biblical theology.

In the end there is a life lesson, hard earned, and the scars are both physical and emotional, perhaps there are even scars on her soul as well. The German philosopher, Nietzsche, said that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. This is not true. A body decimated by cancer, or a mind stricken with a malady, does not increase in strength, it makes the individual weaker. So it is for the victim of domestic abuse. No one would choose to go through the crucible of abuse to achieve greater strength. What one can hope for, and sometimes achieve, is a greater wisdom in life and a hope for a better day. This author shines the lantern brightly for those trying to find freedom, and for those who are as yet unblemished. Hopefully, they will heed the call. It was made with a clear, informed, and powerful voice.

Excellent business advice

I stayed at a Marriott in Denver last week and found a copy of this book in the nightstand. I expected it to be hogwash and instead found it to be the most useful business book I've ever read. It is a quick read (about 150 pages, not the 240 mentioned in the Amazon catalog). It is entertaining without being self-indulgent and informative without being preachy. The anecdotes revealed an appropriate level of introspection (my one quibble is that Mr. Marriott claims that his family and faith come before business and yet also describes himself as a workaholic). I'm not in the hospitality industry and yet I found dozens of parallels to my own business (computer software and book publishing). Most interesting were the frank assessments of Marriott's business mistakes. He truly used them as an opportunity to learn. The book is chock full of excellent and thought-provoking strategies and totally devoid of the cheesy buzzwords so prevalent in, say, the latest Tom Peters books. Although I have no association with Marriott, the book will cause me to examine the entire service industry in a new light.

Sound advice from an industry leader

In The Spirit To Serve, Bill Marriott offers advice on how to develop the type of management basics and solid core values that made his company an industry leader. These ideas are neither new nor radical. They are the simple lessons that Mr. Marriott has learned during his lifetime tenure at Marriott.

� Take a hands-on approach to your firm. Don't sit at your desk. Walk around your facility and interact with your employees. Make sure they know that you care about what they do.

� Managing well depends on listening well. Cultivate patience and keep an open mind when listening to ideas from employees and customers.

� Give your employees the tools they need to work. Make sure employees are properly trained for their jobs. After training, make sure there are support systems in place to assist employees.

� Offer exceptional employee incentives. Marriott has offered employees a toll-free consultation service, profit-sharing programs, promotion from within and several recognition programs.

� Encourage teamwork among workers. Create an environment in which the rewards of working together outweigh the rewards of individual interest.

� Don't take your partners for granted.

� Discover what works best and do it. Develop detailed standard operating procedures. The right way of doing things is worth making a habit.

� Balance who you are with where you are going. Maintain order within your organization while embracing change.

� Don't let growing pains destroy what you have built. Stay close to the daily grind of your business during periods of growth. Keep a close eye on quality control.

� Don't waffle over decision making. Stand by the decisions you make.

� Learn to recognize boom and bust signals. Pay attention to colleagues, reports and other indicators in your industry to get a realistic picture of what is happening. Don't be overconfident.

An Excellent Book About Business Principles

I really enjoyed this book. I was vacationing at a Marriott Hotel and actually bought this book I wanted to read it so much (even though I thought it should just be given away to the guests). It did not disappoint me. As one of the other reviewers noted, it was a well-written, easy read.
Mr. Marriott inspired me with the business tips contained in the book. I especially enjoyed reading about the checklists that Marriott Hotels uses in its business. I really like checklists too. Why invent the wheel everytime you want to do something? Why try to remember all of the steps needed to complete a task, such as making up a room at a Marriott Hotel? Why not just find out what works and put it on paper?! In this way, a business can create a standardized process that can be taught to its employees, instead of relying upon each individual's whim. This idea is also discussed in Michael Gerber's excellent book, The E Myth Revisited: Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It.
I also enjoyed reading J. W. Marriott, Jr's criticisms of his father's way of making decisions (I also thought it was interesting that he was so negative with regard to his father, in a published book). Jr. said that his father fretted too much about decisions and basically drove himself crazy. Jr. says in this book that one should not try to make a perfect business decision. That involves too much angst and is a waste of time. One should gather the necessary information to make an informed decision as best as one can, then actually make the decision. The price of pefection is prohibitive.
I hope you find this book as enjoyable and as inspiring as I did.
