Very turgidly written and translated, with much less depth of information than I expected. It's rather like an expanded encyclopedia entry than a real biography (about 100 pages of text, not including the bibliography, which is extensive and useful).

World War II had a profound impact on Walt Disney and his Studio. The onset of the war couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Hollywood producer. The Studio was coming off a highpoint in its history. Revenue from Snow White enabled Disney to build his new, ultra-modern Studio in Burbank, and feature production was in full swing.

Just as a string of new Disney features were about to open, the Nazi juggernaut rolled across most of Europe shuttering theater doors in the process. Prewar, Disney films were distributed to 55 countries. By 1944, 81% of the Company’s revenue was being generated by just the United States, Canada, and England. As the yoke of oppression descended on Europe, Walt Disney’s ledger flowed from black to red.

Disney and his staff quickly adapted to the new reality by becoming a bonafide war plant. Feature film production was replaced, for the most part, with government and military work. Instead of classic fairy tales, Disney produced training films for all branches of the military, incentive films for the Federal Government, and a series of propaganda films the Studio’s own publicity Department referred to as “psychological productions.” The day after Pearl Harbor, Disney entered into a contract with the Navy for the production of a series of airplane identification films. Government worked sustained his Studio for the war's duration and Walt Disney, ever the patriot, offered his services at cost or for free.

Disney characters also pitched-in on the home front. Mickey, Donald, Goofy, and the rest of the gang promoted war bonds, savings stamps, blood donor drives, gas and food rationing, victory gardens, and scrap and salvage campaigns.

And as new fighting units were formed, Disney artists fulfilled 1,200 requests for combat insignia sent in not only by American servicemen looking for a familiar reminder of life back home, but also by men serving in the units of Allied nations like Britain, Canada, China, France, and Poland.

dedicated research

This is a scholarly and extremely well researched book on Disney studios during WWII and their many contributions to the war effort.

Altho well written in a clear manner- it is not a "page turner" or "easy read".

On the other hand it is a must read for those interested in Disney history or Hollywood in WWII.

It has links to copious illustrations on the authors website. A version with glossy illustrations would be nice, but I fear very expensive.

I'm a pretty sure that David Lesjak wrote Service with Character: The Disney Studio
& World War II for me. My Master's degree focused on World War II history. And when I crash my way through Disney books it is often this era my mind wanders towards. So I am pretty sure that Lesjak wrote this title mostly so I can finally have my curious questions answered.

David Lesjak in Service with Character: The Disney Studio & World War II details the efforts of the Walt Disney Studio in supporting the American, and Allied, war effort. He provides detailed chapters on the home front, insignia creation, propaganda and training films and contributions to print media. Along with these chapters that provide a transactional history of the studio's efforts, Lesjak provides a detailed look at the development of the failed Gremlins live-action film and all its complications. As a companion to the chapters, the authors provides a detailed list of supporting artifacts that can be viewed online. And he reprints letters and messages of interest in a series of Appendixes.

Overall I was impressed with Service with Character as a solid historical monograph that has been well researched and written in a clear manner that even non history buffs could read. The topics did satisfy my interest on a number of topics, like insignia. I am pleased to now have this volume in my Between Library for easy reference. My only quibble is around the lists of supporting collectibles for viewing. I really wish that some of them could have been included as illustrations within the text. It would likely be cost prohibitive to print images of the numerous items listed. I am still old school reading print copies. And it is difficult to reference a website during my prime reading time. So, reading through the artifacts I was inspired to go look for some of these objects. At the time of this posting, the website supporting the book with the collectibles is not yet up.

The book really illuminated this period of Disney history for me. And the book makes it clear that the Walt Disney Studio was financially pressed during this era, and much of it was due to Walt Disney's own efforts. Disney legitimately supported the American war effort and his choices lead him to lose money during a time where his film markets were already dwindling. For example, the short film he made for the Treasury Department The New Spirit further limited his markets by providing a free Disney short to theaters. Therefore, they did not need to order the newest Disney short to bring in an audience. And it is remarkable reading the struggles Disney went through to get paid by the U.S. government while being accused of price gouging on a product that was actually cutting into Disney profits. And the story of Disney's insignia production, which was completed for free and always in demand, was a topic I have wanted to read about for awhile. As one reads through the chapter one can easily grow to admire the dedication of Henry "Hank" Porter who took the lead on this Disney morale initiative for the armed forces.

Service with Character is a must own for Walt Disney Studio history fans. The text does an excellent job outlining a key moment in studio history. Additionally, World War II history enthusiasts will also enjoy this book, since it shows one company's war efforts. In many ways, Disney is one example of the many companies who's production was reoriented towards the war and struggled with diminishing profits and dwindling work forces.

For me, Service with Character has filled a key need in my Between Books library. I love the detailed accounts of film and insignia production found in the text. And I cannot help but admire the efforts of Walt Disney and his staff for keeping a studio open while finding their own avenues to support the war effort.

As the fifth star reflects "I love it." Service with Character, etc is a great reference and is full of what I call 'great read' stories that have never been published before. This book helped me immensely in my research about World War II submarine insignia. I advocate History not shared, is History lost! Bravo Zulu to David Lesjak for pulling together a huge amount of information and getting it published so others can benefit. I highly recommend this book for those who need information about that time when Walt Disney was a huge supporter of the war effort. I look forward to seeing more "About the Author" that is missing from the book.

A great great value for money. I bought lots of taschen books back in Paris and this one's quality is just as any taschen art books. It's such a nice reference book to have with very nice pick of pictures, yet it only costs 15$. Incredible.

Loved it (except for the small print) so much I bought two more books by this team. It covers Designers A-Z, and features a Timeline) I use the book for reference. Its s a great for memory jogging--oh yeah I remember that chair! Such a reasonable price the book is worth buying just for the nostalgia. So many more out there with less information and a lot more money.

One of the few unexamined pieces of the Balkan jigsaw, the Sandzak region, straddling the border area between the now independent states of Serbia and Montenegro, is heir to a complex and contested history, characterised by foreign occupation and domestic conflict. The heartland of the first Serbian medieval kingdom, the area fell under the control of the Ottoman Turks in the late fourteenth century. But as the Ottoman Empire was rolled back during the tumultuous nineteenth century, the Sandzak, positioned at the interface between the Hapsburg and Ottoman Empires, became the focus of Great Power politics.

Divided by Serbia and Montenegro during the Balkan Wars, occupied by the Austrians during the First World War, the Sandzak was then incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918. The area was again occupied by Italian and German forces during the Second World War, during which internecine conflicts between competing domestic political forces intensified. Granted autonomous status by the communist-led Partisans in 1943, the Sandzak was again divided between Serbia and Montenegro in 1945. Yet this short period of autonomy remained a powerful symbol, and as Yugoslavia began to unravel in the 1990s, the 'Sandzak Question' re-emerged.
The Sandzak: A History attempts to demystify the enigma of this little-know part of the Balkans. Offering a detailed yet succinct analysis of its religious and ethnic dynamics, the authors chart a course through conflicting historical narratives to provide a comprehensive overview of the complex history of this contested land.

About the Author

Kenneth Morrison is a Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at De Montfort University, Leicester, and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the London School of Economics (Research on Southeast Europe--LSEE) in 2011-12. He has written extensively on the history and politics of the Balkans and is the author of Montenegro: A Modern History (IB Tauris, 2009).

Elizabeth Roberts is a former diplomat and Balkan scholar who taught Southeast European history at universities in the Republic of Ireland and the United States. She is a recognised authority on Balkan history and is the author of The Realm of the Black Mountain: A History of Montenegro (Hurst & Co., 2007).

Absolutely worth it!

My parents are originally from Plav, Montenegro and now we live in New York City. They taught me basic history growing up, but it wasn't until I started to read this book that I learned so much. It is really interesting and it goes back all the way back from early civilization in the Sandzak to the present day. I was a little worried about the price but now that I've read it, it makes sense, there's so much information. If your looking to learn more about your roots like myself, or just want to learn about the accurate history of Sandzak, this is a must buy.

A must-read for lovers of Balkan History

I purchased a paper version of this book in a brick & mortar store. This is a very well-researched and well-written historical survey of one of the more mysterious parts of the Balkans, the Sandzak of Novi Pazar. Although only a tiny sliver of land straddling the border between today's Montenegro and Serbia, Sandzak played an out-sized role in the Great Power intrigues and power struggles of the second half of the 19th and first decade of the 20th centuries. Morrison and Roberts bring this region to life, as they offer up the first comprehensive overview of its history and often turbulent past. Having studied Sandzak intensively, and having spent much time there, I can highly recommend this book to any and all readers.

About the Author
Christy Ford Chapin is an assistant professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her areas of research include political, economic, and business history as well as the history of capitalism. A key question driving her research is how the blending of public and private power has created a distinctive form of capitalism - American capitalism. Chapin has won numerous awards to support her work, including the John E. Rovensky Fellowship in American Business and Economic History and a Miller Center for Public Affairs Fellowship. Her work has been published in Studies in American Political Development, the Journal of Policy History, Enterprise and Society, and the Business History Review.
