A GHETTO LOVE STORY

Not only does Tia go looking for her father at the wrong time (in the middle of a bloody street war), but she also winds up becoming emotionally attached to a young gang leader in a way that will without doubt change her life forever.

This book should not be confused with other current Urban/Street Lit books on the market. A Ghetto Love Story is intended to be a very realistic look into the pain and misery of the African-American street culture. Although the story line contains hard language and extreme violence—which is simply part and parcel of street life—it likewise contains an underlying message of love and hope.

Should have been a 5 star read

I've previously read stories by Percy Levy and fallen in love with the characters, the message, and his writing. I expected to have the same feeling towards this book and was extremely disappointed.
I will say the storyline and characters are great and I have no complaints at all. I especially love Casper and the many facets of his personality and persona.
My complaints: overall lack of editing. Most is minor and while irritating not distracting. Except, that the characters names are messed up through the book causing you to have to reread once you figure out who's really talking. You have a character called Kevy Kev who is shot, except after that scene he's called Lil' Mikey for the rest of the book.
That brings me to my second and biggest complaint. Just when the book starts to pick up and take off, it ends. I'm so sick of these half books being called part 1 to forever. If you want a short story fine, and least give it a decent ending, don't just stop.My guess is this was one complete fantastic novel the publisher chopped in half.
Leo Sullivan's company used to put out such fantastic books. Stories and quality were far above the competition, but now they are just like every other mass producing Internet publisher. The publisher really failed the author on this one!
I would not recommend this book until it's edited and rereleased. Once that happens it will be a wonderful, emotional, enlightening read.

A Ghetto Love Story

This was my first read by Percy and I can honestly say not bad. The only confusing part for me was the beginning when Ebony and Murk were introduced. I felt like more should've been stated about them instead of them just popping back up out of nowhere. Tia was persistent in knowing more about her father but Black was tripping bad. I thought for sure Case was a crooked cop but I understood where he was coming from a little. I liked Casper and the way he thought. Even though he was a street dude many people mistakenly let his lifestyle define who he was and passed judgment. Sneaky T was something else but you couldn't fault him for trying to look out for his longtime friend. Havoc wasn't as hard as he thought he was and had to see first hand the life he was trying to portray. It took some things going down but I liked the understanding between Tia and Casper. Hopefully a lot more answers will be uncovered in the next installment and things won't get too chaotic. Will Black give Tia all the answers she's seeking, has Case made a mistake with the his last decision, just how much trouble will Casper cause after everything that has occurred, what will become of Tia and Casper, and will Black's love for his daughter finally outweigh all the wrongs he's done and make him get right???

Okay so at the beginning I was totally confused because it started out with Ebony.Then went into something way different.The book was overall good and shocking.But I don't think that it showed a lot of why Ebony was in the book at all.I definitely love how Tia loves her dad regardless of wat has happen in her life.Officer Case is cray I can't believe the things he is doing.Casper is so adorable to Tia I do believe there is going to be something there.Well I can't wait to read part two

About the Author
John Rogers cut his teeth with local currencies by running a local exchange system in Wales for 10 years. He co-founded the Wales Institute for Community Currencies at the University of Newport, which he directed with Geoff Thomas from 2003-2007. They coordinated research into the effects of time banking in ex-mining communities, which was published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation in 'Hidden Work'. John is co-author with Margrit Kennedy and Bernard Lietaer of People Money - the Promise of Regional Currencies and an Associate Scholar with the Institute for Leadership and Sustainability (IFLAS) at the University of Cumbria. He offers training and consulting for local currencies through Value for People and has spoken and led workshops at many international conferences.

best lay person intro to benefits and resources for communities

While info on local money, community currency, can be found online and in books, much of the literature is by economists and authors more interested in abstract and technical details. John's effort is more user-friendly for the average reader or communitarian wishing to know if their community is ripe to to invest effort into local money.

The book excerpt here on Amazon, from the first chapter, paints a picture of how local money knits a community together and how people FEEL using local money.

Seems to me our most likely future, not far away, for most of us, is TWO currencies, one for local face-to-face transactions, useful for keeping wealth circulating locally. The other money we will use will be valid worldwide, or at least nationally, for purchasing things outside our local community. A two-money system is one of the very few solutions to prevent wealth from being siphoned out of local communities towards multi-national corporations and Wall Street.

A student who was required to work through the whole book

This textbook is disconnected and poorly organized. The authors of each chapter are so absorbed in their own work that they don't seem to remember that the text is supposed to be for a multidisciplinary audience. The problem sets are hit or miss, and in some cases the solutions are not supported by the text (if you relied on the text alone, you couldn't solve the problems). The biomechanics and biomaterials chapters are good, but the imaging, fluids and mass transfer chapters are lacking. If you want a good, broad bioengineering text, you should look for the Ratner book instead.

Lame textbook

I used it as one of my graduate level classes. I feel it is a really mediocre textbook. Not even well balanced among different chapters. It should change its name to bio-mechanics rather than bio-engineering. But my instructor recommend it, never understand why? Only because it was written by some Berkeley guys? It is a stupid excuse.

Singh's artwork in this oversize book is similar to Edward Gorey's surrealistic pen-and-ink illustrations. It lends itself perfectly to Dunning's dark tale. Fans of H. P. Astonishingly the work of two first-time creators, this is a book that both takes full advantage of its form and offers something unique in the current graphic-novel market: a deep strangeness that pervades every panel, every figure, and even every object within. Although Dunning’s humorously dry writing and the bizarrely calm affect of an array of enjoyable characters help create the creepy tone, Singh’s flowing, surreal perspectives and vaguely Ditko-esque landscapes of alternate planes are what will cast readers into an unfamiliar and occasionally uncomfortable world. Even amid the constant barrage of obtuse and off-kilter imaginings, there are indelible images that stand out: tortured smoke haunting the air over a mansion; intertwined souls trapped within the insectoid eye of a fly. What’s it about? Well, the plot concerns Salem’s inheritance of a magic orb from his deceased father, after which he is abetted by the freakish denizens of Dr. Kinoshita’s Circus and opposed by the Seven Dark Elders of Midnight City. Beautiful, Creepy & Macabre!

Reason for Reading: I was immediately taken with the publisher's eerie plot summary.

This is a beautiful book. Oversized like a large picture book with decorated cloth covered boards, it feels like a treasure in your hands. Upon opening the book, the story grips you right away as if something by Poe. Then turn the page where the artwork starts and immediately Gory comes to mind and the further one gets into the story with the mixture of art and text their is a very strong Tim Burton vibe going and I actually started imaging the story being filmed with Johnny Depp as Salem Brownstone. The artwork is truly masterful. Each frame is so detailed, this book could take many readings and each reading would reveal something you had missed the previous times through. How do I describe the art? Outlandish, eerie, macabre, bizarre and just outright fiendishly freakish (in a good way!).

Salem Brownstone, a grown man, who hasn't seen his father since he was six receives a telegram that his father has died and left him his mansion and the contents and he must come claim it ASAP that evening at 9pm. Upon arrival Salem finds an old creepy Victorian house and notices a sign announcing a circus nearby. Once inside he discovers his father was a magician and dons the cape, when he hears a noise. As he investigates he happens upon Cassandra Contortionist who has been waiting for him. She has a scrying orb that belonged to his father that she must pass on to him. She takes him down to the circus for further explanation and it is here he learns that he must take over his father's role in keeping the world safe from the evil creatures of another dimension.

This is a macabre story and certainly not going to be for everyone but if you like Poe or Lovecraft then this will be along your tastes. The atmosphere is very dark and heavy, the story is very creepy and when you think you've seen it all something even creepier happens. I was engrossed with the story and the whole book itself. A wonderful Hallowe'en read. From the ending, there are hints that Salem may appear in a sequel.

Surreal!

This is a very, very good and strange graphic novel. The story is well mounted and drives you through that strange world in its own steady pace, but everything is diffracted, stretched, transformed by Nikhil's psychodelic drawing. The combination of both is something very hard to classify, there is something of a classical american comic book in the standard division of the chapters and the story move, there is some early Moebius, some late Moebius, with some depressive, dark, noir tar-like paint in the corners, both in the drawings and the story, and a fantasy feel that is different from both usual american and european graphic novel style...

It's not an average good-for-all comic book, but definitely a fine and delicious gem for connaisseurs.

bought before i read

I literally borrowed this from a library and just opened it and had to buy it. I didnt even read it before then. I needed it, it has so much art in it and it looks like it took a long bit of hard work and I seriously respected it. Its like a giant book of art, loveeee
