Complete waste of money

This is another example of an item that has questionable reviews. All the prior reviews give this product a 5 star rating and offer superficial feedback. Most of the reviewers have only reviewed this item which questions the authenticity of the reviews.

I ordered this for the Kindle and went through several lessons with my son. I realized very quickly that very little effort went into writing the material for this book and it offers very limited vocabulary building. At a few words or phrases a week, your child will get virtually no mileage from this. I would recommend investing in a much better book or CD... or even taking lessons from a native language speaker.

I'm already pursuing other products and have no intent of finishing this book.

Learn Spanish and Really Use It!

I teach a Mommy & Me Spanish class and I am using 52 Weeks of Family Spanish as our book. I think this book is a great resource for parents who would like to help their kids begin using Spanish everyday in their daily routines. The book teaches nearly 200 new words and phrases and suggests games or activities to practice using those new words and phrases. Those who are not fluent in Spanish or well-versed in grammar will like this book as the lessons are concise and not overwhelming. Unfortunately families cannot learn Spanish completely from a one-hour lesson a week--that is why I love this book because it helps families start using Spanish at home in their everyday lives in fun, engaging ways.

This way of learning takes the family on a journey. The book gives the family just a few words or phrases to practice all week each week of the year. What an easy way to get started on Spanish. I wish I had begun something like this as soon as my sons were able to speak.

I just couldn't put it down!

This is the first Lucado book I have read, but it won't be the last! From page one I loved this author. He has a wonderful way of making you know that God is interested in you. He shares wonderful stories in life that let you know there is a God who loves you. When I read this book I felt very loved by my Creator, and it's also helped me to see the little miracles in life that happen everyday. Everyone who doubts there is a God should get a copy of this book. I can't wait to dig into another one of Lucado's works! I really like the way he sees God, and I am beginning to see God the way I should, Finally!

This is the fifth copy of this book that I have purchased. I have given every copy to a friend. Max Lucado is my favorite author and these are three of his best books in one volume. Of course, all of his books are his best books. Pick any Lucado title. You will not be disappointed. He writes as if he were speaking only to you. "In the Grip of Grace" is one of my favorites, but every book I own of Lucado's is my favorite. He never disappoints. His tomes invite multiple readings and his clear style makes difficult truths easy to grasp. I just love his writing.

Drawing on evidence never before seen in the West-including combat records of early engagements-David Glantz claims that in 1941 the Red Army was poorly trained, inadequately equipped, ineptly organized, and consequently incapable of engaging in large-scale military campaigns and that both Hitler and Stalin knew it. He provides the most complete and convincing study of why the Soviets almost lost the war that summer, dispelling many of the myths about the Red Army that have persisted since the war and soundly refuting Viktor Suvorov's controversial thesis that Stalin was planning a preemptive strike against Germany.

The first 6 months of War

Stumbling Colossus is a examination of the Red Army on the Eve of Operation Barbarossa. The books examines the Red Army and looks at the prepardeness for war and the prepartations being made for action against the Germans. The book looks at the largest army in the world and takes a pentrating look at the flaws in the system. We see why the Soviets were able to survive the disasters of the begining of the war and the causes behind some of these disasters.

The author relies too much on Soviet sources. Need updating.

David Glantz has reproduced a lot of Soviet data to show how ill-prepared the Soviet Red Army was in the face of the German Wehrmacht's invasion of the USSR, June 1941. While his statistics are numerous (from Soviet sources), any analysis of the "political-military" aspects of Stalin policy before June 1941 is absent. To his (Glantz's) mind, any present-day Russian scholar who would dare challenge the conventional view that Stalin pursued only a "defencist" policy vis-a-vis Hitler from the Nazi-Soviet agreements to the June '41 invasion is an "anti-Soviet" bigot, to paraphrase his accusations against these reputable, post-Soviet Russian military historians. But Mr. Glantz himself is the one who is being outpaced by new revelations from Soviet archives. These disclosures indicate that Stalin was planning his own offensive strategy against Hitler (which does not excuse, of course, Operation Barbarossa). Second, in his other books as well, Glantz in his shows his lack of acquaintanceship with NEW, post-Communist historiography. Anyone who would care to update himself/herself on this might see recent issues of the journal TRANSITIONS, which tracks in scholarly manner the latest developments -- and books -- in the former East European bloc, including Russia.

Glantz v Suvorov; neither right nor wrong...

Some of my past reviews of Glantz have been unhelpful. I used to agree with Suvorov, now I have a third way.

Glantz is correct. The Red Army in 1941 was woefully badly trained and equipped and in no condition to take on the Wehrmacht. It probably could not have invaded Europe in 1941 without being torn to pieces by the Wehrmacht.

However Suvorov is correct in his general idea that Stalin wanted Europe; he had an espionage and sabotage network second to none to help him, if the Red Army ever got that far. (read 'The Red Orchestra' to find out more about the Soviet spy networks in Germany and Switzerland.)

Stalin wa a chess player. He played chess with lives and territory. He couldn't stop the Wehrmacht invading. What he did was to try to buy time, first with keeping Hitler happy by supplying him with primary resources such as oil, grain, minerals etc. until the last moment. Then he resisted the Wehrmacht by throwing men and machines into the fray to be destroyed. Why? Well he had an 18million man reserve army that the Germans knew nothing about. the Germans really had no idea how big the Soviet military potential really was. Germans did not know about the KV-1 or the T-34.

Stalin knew exactly what the Germans knew about him and what their own situation was because he had spies right in the centre of the German general staff system, the OKW. He knew everything that was going on in Germany and in the Wehrmacht almost before the commanders in the field knew it. In 1941 when he met Roosevelt's aid Hopkins, he was able to tell Hopkins thatthe frontline would stabilise by December around the North to South axis through Moscow. He got the distance right to within about 50 miles. that's how good his information was from his German informants. (information on Hopkins from ' Sunrise at Abadan' by Stewart)

It seems Stalin had decided to trade millions of Red Army lives and large areas of territory in the western Soviet Union in exchange for enormous quantities of lend-lease supplies from America and the UK coming through Iran and Vladivostok. But also he was counting on the fact that the Wehrmacht would gradually wear itself down fighting the Red Army, from July to December. he knew the Wehrmacht was completely unprepared for winter, especially they ferocious Russian winter. He knew if he could draw the Wehrmacht into Russia and into the Russian winter,a bit like the Russians did with Napoleon, he had a good chance of beating it. Stalin knew the Wehrmacht did not have the resources for a long war, or for a slugging match. at the same time the Red Army was learning from the Germans how to fight a modern war, at the cost of millions of lives sacrificed. By the time of Stalingrad,just 16 months into the invasion, the Wehrmacht was truly on it's last legs, as was Hitler, and the Red Army was beginning to look much more like a Soviet version of the Wehrmacht. They had been learning their lessons well.

so much so that from 1944 onwards they really were invading/liberating Europe for the Soviets cause and the communist ideology. They were doing this in a way they couldn't possibly have managed in 1941.

It was thanks to two things that they didn't succeed in getting past Germany. firstly, arguably and controversially, fanatical resistance of the SS divisions slowed down the Red Army advance, together with considerations like weather and logistical problems, so that the Western allies were able to land in Normandy and get to Germany before the Soviets could take the whole of Europe. it was acombination of these circumstances that prevented Stalin in 1945 from completing what he would have liked to have done in 1941 according to Suvorov but did not have the capability to do so. Even the Soviet general Zhukov commented on how the German SS divisions had slowed him downwith their fanatical resistance.

So when it comes down to it, both Glantz and Suvorov are correct, and yet neither seems to have a complete picture. I don't claim to have the complete picture, just a slightly more complete one than either of those two gentlemen.

I would say that Glantz is good to read if you want to know how the Soviet army went from a shambolic mess to the effective war machine that it became, how all that was made possible. I give him three stars for information, but I really can't stand his style, and I still think he is a Soviet/Russian 'patsy'.

A Very Valuable Book

I really appreciate Elizabeth Spring's accessible, down to earth, yet deep & soulful approach to astrology. I found this book to be very easy to read, as it is engaging, well-organized and she writes with a straightforward, sometimes humorous, and always insightful style. This book is truly valuable to me, as I am beginning on the journey of learning more in depth about astrology, and I feel that her work offers a way in which I can tune into a richer awareness of myself on a soul level. I love her Jungian perspective, as it comes from a place of honoring all aspects of our experience as a tool for growth & expansion, which feels empowering & uplifting. With the mainstream misunderstanding of so many astrological happenings as "good" or "bad," it is refreshing to hear from an astrologer that there is true purpose, meaning, & gifts through the challenges. With the way the book is laid out, it is also easy to refresh your knowledge at any time in your learning process.

Astrology for self-empowerment

This is Elizabeth Spring's third book on astrology. As always she is well-informed, lucid and innovative in her approach. In this book she teachs readers how to use their rising sign to determine planet placements in houses of their horoscope. She also covers major astrological transition phases. Spring always respects her reader's intelligence, encouraging the reader to use astrology thoughtfully - as a tool for self-empowerment. Rather than passively relying on astrologers and developing a dependency on outside interpretation, she encourages the reader to be pro-active and become an expert on their own potential. A great read.

With all due respect to the previous reviewer, I really don't see the use in contrasting Perec and Clancy. They're not just in different ballparks, but they play different games. Clancy's job is to tell a good story and make things simple; he does it well, and I'm a fan. Perec's job, however, is to make sure his reader knows exactly how difficult things really are. This goes doubly for an approach to one of the most difficult historical moments of the recent past, the Holocaust. Perec's "W or the Memory of Childhood" embodies all of the violence of this historical tragedy and of memories of such tragedy.
There are two narrative threads running through this book, touching each other occasionally in a manner that illuminates both in strange and arresting ways. Half of the chapters are "W," the fictional account of a man, Gaspard Winckler, who has survived a war by adopting the identity of a parapalegic (the real Gaspard Winckler) who later dies in a shipwreck off the Tierra del Fuego. Prodded by the mysterious Otto Apfelstahl, the living Gaspard embarks on a journey to recover his memory of the real Gaspard, to discover who he was and how he died. This journey becomes, in the second half of "W," a description in coldly anthropological terms of a seemingly totalitarian island-state, in which citizens are forced to compete in brutal and naked athletic games for things like food and the right to procreate--the basics of human life.
The other half of the chapters are Perec's own autobiographical contributions, beginning, despite the promising title of the book, with the admission, "I have no memory of childhood." Perec's voice sifts through his rubbled past--his father's death in the French Army, his mother's transportation to Auschwitz, his being concealed in a Catholic school and raised by his relatives--and attempts to separate what he remembers from what he has been taught to remember through photos, language, etc. His reflections are marked with a humor that is endearing in light of his horrifying experiences, and with a subtlety that is astounding in light of the atrocities to which the text must bear remote witness.
The two narratives, "W" and "The Memory of Childhood," weave around each other like ivy, finally becoming, in a stunning and climactic final chapter, part and parcel of one story. Perec's ultimate fusion of his willful fictions and his awe-full remembrances is powerful and well-presaged; the entire universe of the book builds beautifully and disturbingly toward this final moment, as the fictions become more like fact and the autobiography occupies itself increasingly with fictions.
Bellos' translation is superb, even if one does lose some of the very productive puns of the original (the moment early on, for example, when "l'Histoire avec sa grande hache" should make us think simultaneously of History with a capital H and History with its big axe; Bellos sticks with the capital H rendering of the phrase).
So, no, "W or the Memory of Childhood" is not Tom Clancy. But it doesn't mean to be, and it doesn't need to be. What it is, instead, is a sobering, touching, daunting and disturbing reminder of some of the worst our century has had to offer. If you are interested in a writer who is unashamed of standing heroically baffled and gaping in the face of immeasurable atrocity, buy and read this book.

Georges Perec's W, or The Memory of Childhood is an astonishing narrative that fuses two stories about the exploration of one man's disoriented childhood during WWII and another's disturbing tale of W, a place where nightmares become reality. The reader is led to believe that these two tales have little in common, but as they unfold it becomes painfully clear just how connected they are.

The first tale is an autobiography of a man struggling to understand his shattered childhood, the loss of his parents, and the painful experiences of growing up in Nazi occupied France. Perec utilizes a style of fragmented writing, much like the actual memory of our own childhoods. This style allows the reader to see how memory is truly bits and pieces of shrouded experience that must be sorted and analyzed. In spite of the title, Perec admits that "I have no childhood memories" in the opening of the autobiography and this is displayed throughout the tale. Every memory, every photograph is poked with holes, which is made evident by the recurrent phrases beginning with "perhaps" and "I think" and "maybe". Memory of childhood cannot be painted in a clear picture; it will always be distorted and vague and Perec's style incorporates this idea.

The second tale is a story that seems to have no relation to the autobiography. It is a story about a man with little past who has deserted the French army and lives in Europe by assuming the identities of other people. Under the assumed identity of Gaspard Winckler, the protagonist reaches the merciless island of W, a direct metaphor of Nazi Germany. The island-state forces people to compete in Olympic like events in order to win the basics of human life. Winners are glorified with rich clothes and lavish meals, and of course encouraged to over-indulge to ensure they would not win the following day. Losers are stripped naked and beaten, but are occasionally stoned to death and hung on the city gates to make it clear that `survival of the fittest' is the law of the land.

The entire island of W is related to the ideas that fueled ethnic cleansing during WWII. The degradation and punishment of the weak and the glorification of the strong on W is much like Hitler's final plan and his attempt at establishing an Arian race. Although the stories remain separate until the end of the book, these metaphorical ties are evident and can be seen by the attentive reader. The tales seem to want to converge, and then they both take off in separate directions again. The merging of the stories builds throughout the narrative as Perec uses light touching of ideas and metaphors to link W, and Perec's autobiography in 1940's France.

The real fusion of the two tales comes in the final chapters of the story when the autobiography begins to turn more like fiction, and the fictional story of W, starts to become more factual. We learn that the island of W is a real island and that it is being used as a deportation station in South America. We learn of what truly went on in camps and how hard people were worked and how badly they were treated. These stories are beautifully woven together by Perec and they show true compassion and inventive writing style. This is a touching narrative of some our century's worst times, and a wonderful piece of writing by Georges Perec.

This one's never gonna pull readers away from Clancy

A unfortunate sacrifice of story in favor of experimental form, this hybrid of autobiography and politically-charged fairy tale never actually coheres and never really gets across the real atrocities both the author and Europe underwent. That the novel is patently a literary game somehow doesn't seem related to the fictional culture of games being indicted in the novel, and since the relation between the form and the content is unclear the book falls flat. Or maybe the novel is about the simultaneous futility and necessity of testimony. Unfortunately any subtler rationale for the book is lost in tumult.
